Nothing ruins a good video I capture with my phone than finding out later on that the audio recording is terrible. That’s why I’ve often leaned into using a wireless microphone, even though problem with many of them is that they’re inconvenient to use. Wireless mics often requiring me to connect other peripherals to my phone to get them to work properly.
I don’t bother with having to do all of that anymore because the Shure MoveMic 88+ finally addresses my biggest problem. It doesn’t need any cables, receivers, or other dangly attachments — instead, it connects via Bluetooth to my phone. It's become my favorite wireless microphone when I'm on the go.
Not only does the Shure MoveMic 88+ save me time and frustration, but it instantly improves my audio quality. I’ve used it for vlogging, recording submission reels with actors, and even for interviews over the past few months. I’m constantly switching out the camera gear I carry with me all the time, but Shure's mic has found a permanent residence in my bag. Here’s why.
No wires whatsoever
As much as I love using wireless microphones like the DJI Mic and Rode Wireless Go, they’re not that quick to set up — which is why the Shure MoveMic 88+ has a distinct advantage in my experience.
This all stems from the fact that the Shure MoveMic 88+ pairs directly to my phone through Bluetooth, so there’s no wire setup required to connect a receiver to my phone. My workflow is streamlined significantly because of this, so I’m not wasting any prep time — virtually allowing me to start recording video right away.
So far, I haven’t experienced any audio issues recording with either my iPhone 17 Pro or Galaxy Z Flip 7. The Bluetooth connection is pretty stable and easily covers the range I need it to work at. In my own testing, it’s been able to maintain a connection upward of 80 feet with Bluetooth. Even though it’s nowhere as far as other wireless microphones I own that operate on 2.4GHz digital wireless connections, it’s still more than enough for what I use the Shure mic for.
Perfect interview setup
Although the vast majority of my recordings involve one per speaking to the camera, either myself or someone I’m shooting, it’s really helpful when there are four polar patterns to choose from. This effectively lets me use the Shure MoveMic 88+ much like a shotgun microphone to capture audio from the front, while drowning out the stuff coming in from the sides. I’ve found one of the polar patterns ideal for two-way interviews when I’m holding the mic between myself and another person.
Through the Motiv Video app, I can even adjust many of the mic’s parameters — like its gain, speech mode setting, and even set a high pass filter. Speaking of the app, it has all the tools that enthusiasts crave to get the best possible audio recording with video. I really like there’s a monitor that shows me if my audio’s peaking, with options to switch between all the different cameras on my phone.
Pros love it too
While the Shure MoveMic 88+ may seem like a simple wireless microphone for content creators, I appreciate the extra utility of it transforming into a wireless system for professional shooters. That’s because there’s a bundle for a receiver kit that lets me use the Shure MoveMic88+ on my mirrorless camera.
The receiver itself has its own display to show me the audio level of the microphone, while a headphone jack built into it lets me listen to the audio coming from the wireless mic in real time. The kit also contains a holder for the microphone with a cold shoe mount, so I can directly fasten it to my camera to make it act like a shotgun microphone.
Like I said, I really love the ease and straightforward approach of the Shure MoveMic 88+. For those run-and-gun situations when I need to record something with my phone, I’m able to record confidently knowing I’m getting better audio quality with this mic — especially when I have to record audio from a far distance. As much as Apple says its Audio Mix feature can cancel out background noise and improve audio quality, it can’t beat the results I get with the Shure MoveMic 88+.
