A mum-to-be who was already a 'bag of nerves' the day before her C-section says she wasn't happy at all when her own mother began criticising her baby name choices, blasting them as 'weird'. The woman in question is expecting twins and says these will be her first children.
She and husband 'kept silent' about their baby name choices throughout the entirety of her pregnancy, having pored over lists for months in search of ones they both loved. They didn't want "matchy names" for their twin daughters and eventually settled upon the names Alice and Jade.
Shortly before the nervous woman was due to undergo her C-section, her mother rang her up to discuss baby names, and she decided to open up to her about their choices. Now she wishes she hadn't bothered and feels her mum has been too "cruel".
Taking to Reddit, where she goes by the username u/Alive_Ask_3175, the expectant mother wrote: "Last night my mum called me to talk about names and I made a mistake opening up to her with what we selected.
"She is not a native English speaker so the name Jade is 'weird' to her. Then she proceeded to critique the choice of Rose as a middle name for Alice.
"My grandma's name on my dad's side and the only grandma I knew is Rosa/ Roza. We picked Rose not as an honour name per se, but rather as a flower association and a whimsical addition to Alice).
"She told me my grandma was 'cruel' to her and she won't call my daughter that name. All I ever knew is that my grandma loved me very much and that I look just like a copy of her. I took it as a positive thing my whole life."
Explaining that her mother is religious while they are not, she added that the conversation began when her mum revealed she'd had an epiphany in church, which showed her that her granddaughter had to be called Grace.
Although she agreed with her mother that Grace was a "lovely" name, she explained to her that they'd spent months with their hearts set on Alice and Jade already. It was then that her attitude "became very sour".
One fellow Reddit user advised: "Maybe in time she'll come around and love the names. You don't need the trauma or drama. Sometimes we have mums that like to be in control.
"I'm glad you spoke up and set your boundaries. The names you picked are perfectly fine, many of us have daydreamed of having twin girls in what we would name them. You get to actually do that, congratulation! Don't let this overshadow this moment."
Another wrote: "Your mum named her babies, so now it's your turn. Once the babies are here, hopefully, she'll forget her pettiness and love their names as she sees real living babies attached to them. Best wishes!"
