I Used to Hate When Guests Noticed My Old Office Chair – But This Ralph Lauren–Inspired Swivel Gets So Many Compliments

Cognac leather-and-brass office swivel chair styled in a study alongside a neutral wooden desk and bookshelf.

Office chairs might be the least attractive category of furniture. Too often they’re tactical in the worst way – borrowing from gaming culture and, by the looks of it, the design language of a suburban laser tag arena. Which begs the question: what might change if they took inspiration from somewhere a little more elevated? Social media, per usual, read my mind when I stumbled across a cognac faux-leather swivel chair finished with saddle-like stitching and a gleaming brass base that reminded me of the tack rooms from my horse girl days. It still ticks every practical box (a 360° swivel, five casters, a stable base, and a generously padded seat), but aesthetically, it belongs in the equestrian universe I intend to inhabit this Year of the Horse. One might assume it hails from the homeware line of a house like Hermès or Ralph Lauren. But to the surprise and delight of my wallet, this unicorn of a seat is on Wayfair as part of Kelly Clarkson's home range – and quite possibly the first office chair I’ve seen that is actually… pretty. I do believe this explains the 4.1 million views and counting on the video that introduced me to it.

You may have noticed its tailored, tufted back, which isn’t just decorative, either – it’s ergonomically shaped to support long workdays. Meanwhile, the cognac upholstery has a subtle sheen that looks even sharper against the brass base, which adjusts easily for height. Some assembly is required, but reviewers insist it’s painless – about 20 to 30 minutes, tops.Personally, I’d lean fully into the Ralph Lauren aesthetic, pairing it with neutral rugs, curtains, and cushions in brown, navy, or hunter green – maybe a pop of orange for swagger – plus tartan, equestrian-style hardware, and, ideally, more leather and brass. This seat may arrive in a flat-pack box, but it looks like it lives in Bedford. From here on out, your workspace isn’t an office – it’s a study.

More Ralph Lauren-Style Accent Chairs

Here are a few more equestrian-adjacent, heritage-inspired office chairs that caught my eye on my hunt for a home office chair I wouldn't be embarrassed to be spied by guests.

Rich cognac leather and brass may be the cure for the epidemic of ugly office chairs, but we both know this room needs more help than just seating. Home office lighting could use some work, too. Finish the equestrian mood with a cozy, Connecticut-coded glow to really set the scene.
