When looking for recipes I could easily try in my air fryer, I came across brilliant ideas that allow people to have some of their favourite snacks but with lower calorie and fat levels. As air fryers don’t require oil or fats to cook food, and instead use hot air to cook the items, the results tend to be a lot healthier than oven-baked dishes.
After the disastrous attempt at brownies last time, I tried something in my Cosori pro le 4.7 litre air fryer, I decided I would turn back to the trust TikTok food pages to see what I could find that might be even remotely more successful than last time.
One of the ideas that caught my eye was crisps made in the air fryer. These seemed like a fun thing to make and something I could eat when I’m craving a snack. I often want a bag of crisps but afterwards regret how much salt, fat and even sugars they have in them, so I was intrigued to see if this healthier alternative would work better.

The recipe I found on TikTok was very easy to follow, seemingly very straightforward and with only a few steps and ingredients I thought it would be the perfect recipe to try.
I first started off by cutting my potatoes up as thinly as possible. I tried it with my grater but that didn’t work so I had to resort to a knife. I then soaked them in a bowl of water, this is an important step as it helps remove the starch that would make the potatoes stick together during cooking. Once all the starch was out, I drained and dried the potato slices before moving onto seasoning.
You really could add any herbs or spices but I put smoked paprika, mild chilli powder, mixed herbs, salt and pepper in along with a dash of olive oil. After mixing them all in, I popped my slices into the air fryer at 180 degrees celsius for 20 minutes, shaking every five to help them cook all over.
While these were pretty straightforward to make, I found them to be a little more time-consuming than originally thought. The preparation itself easily took 10 to 15 minutes, add the cooking time on top and you’re looking at over half an hour before your crisps are ready. And at the end of it all, mine didn’t fully crisp up.
I feel that while the recipe I followed said to cook them at 180 degrees, I feel that maybe if I had used a lower temperature for a longer period of time they may have crisped up better. And I think I was ambitious with the amount of slices I put in the basket in one go.
Overall, they tasted really good and those that actually turned crispy were lovely but it wasn’t the outcome I was hoping for. I think I will try these again but change the few errors and see what happens.
