Manchester City ace Jack Grealish has revealed his go-to Chinese takeaway order – and it's safe to say it's raised a few eyebrows. The Premier League star has admitted he has the same meal after "every" football game.
A word of warning – his takeaway order isn't for the faint hearted – but after spending at least 90 minutes running his famous calves up and down the football pitch, there's no wonder the winger has an appetite afterwards.
The England and Manchester City star recently revealed his go-to post-match order on the video sharing app TikTok on his club's official page – and it's a whopper of a meal. Jack always orders egg-fried rice, salt and pepper prawns, salt and pepper chips, Singapore chow mein – and who could forget the curry sauce.
Football fans were impressed by the "perfect" order – but couldn't help remarking how expensive that meal would be. The expensive treat costs about £56 from his favourite takeaway, Wings in Manchester.
In the video, Jack said: "Yeah I love Chinese man after every game I get one. I go to Wing's in Manchester, I usually get a takeaway.
"I have Singapore chow mein, I have egg fried rice, I have salt and pepper chips, salt and pepper prawns, and then curry sauce. And then mix it all in, and have a big free for all in there."
It sounded like quite a plateful, so Manchester Evening News reporter Dianne Bourne rang up Wing's to see she we could order the same takeaway as Jack, which totted up to a slightly eye-watering £56.20. Below she details how it all went.
The restaurant is on Deliveroo, but only if you live within a certain distance of the city centre, so I arranged to collect the takeaway from the restaurant on Lincoln Square to take home.
Now, if you've never been to Wing's before, be prepared for quite the interior when you step foot inside. The place, founded by popular restaurateur Wing Shing Chu, is famously a haunt of pretty much every Manchester City and Manchester United footballer that has ever set studs in the city.
There is a plethora of signed plates from 'baller guests all along the walls as evidence of their famous clientele, and it is known for being one of the most luxurious Chinese restaurants in the city. Former Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal and Wayne Rooney both hailed it their favourite restaurant, and as soon as you walk in you'll find a plate from club legend Sir Alex Ferguson extolling its virtues.
Then it's a case of browsing through the different plates to find a right old teamsheet of international players. Everyone from Diego Maradona to Marcus Rashford has dined here over the years.
Now, when I rang up to order Jack's favourite takeaway, I did face a stumbling block. The Man City star said on TikTok that he orders "Singapore Chow Mein" - but it turns out this is not a dish on the menu.
The lady I spoke to was unsure if I wanted a special chow mein, or Singapore Vermicelli, so when I said "erm, I want what Jack Grealish has" she went to speak to someone in the background and came back to suggest the vermicelli, so that's what I went for.
The order was prepared very swiftly, for collection after 20 minutes. Although I admit that my eyes near popped out of my head when I was told the total would be £56.20, which seemed to me a lot of money for a takeaway.
So I was praying it would be worth the investment. Having paid up, I took my steaming takeaway bag home to do what Jack does and "mix it all in" for a "big free for all".
In a nice touch, you get your own chopsticks in with the order, as well as some plastic cutlery if you don't feel adept with them. They also added a small bag of prawn crackers for free, which I munched on the way back to my car and these were utterly delicious.
The first thing I noticed when I opened the bag up at home was just how much food was contained here - it could easily serve two or possibly three people, I reckoned. I even had to get my special "Christmas turkey plate" out of the cupboard in an attempt to hold it all.
I popped the egg fried rice out first, then created a bed of Singapore vermicelli, before adding the clutch of salt and pepper prawns on top. It was tricky working out how I could get the chips on there as well without everything toppling off, but somehow I squidged them all on with only the odd grain of rice flopping off the side.
Then, I had to open up the curry sauce tub and do as Jack does, which is drown the whole plate in sauce to "mix it all up". I should add that before doing this, I had a taste of all the components, which all stood on their own taste merits without the vat of sauce.
However, I do understand why he would choose to do this because, let me tell you, this is the best Chinese curry sauce I've tasted in a long time. Rich, creamy, with a satisfying/alarming little ring of fat around it when I first opened up the pot, it tasted as decadent as you probably desire on a takeaway treat.
All smashed up together, I gathered up the noodles, rice and chips together and it was a salty and peppery flavour hit. The king prawns were also delicious with their own little pots of sauce that they came with, although equally tasted as good within the Grealish-style free for all.
The rice remained fluffy and the chips still crispy and hot despite the time in transit. It all got a massive thumbs up from me, although even given my sizeable appetite, I started to struggle having eaten barely half of this plate-load of carbs.
It was clearly of a size that you could share this between two or three people, which makes the price of it all slightly easier to stomach I suppose. I don't think my budget quite stretches to eating this luxury takeaway after every football game like Mr Grealish, but it certainly was worth sampling for a treat.
And don't worry - none of what you see here went to waste - it was too tasty for that. I reheated the leftovers up for a tea-time treat too.
The full takeaway order and pricing
We placed our order at Wing's on a Wednesday lunchtime over the phone, and were able to collect it 20 minutes later at the Lincoln Square restaurant. There's no parking at the venue, so you may want to factor that into the price - I paid £3 on a meter on King Street West to dash out to get mine.
Here's how it all added up on price.
Salt and pepper king prawns - £21.90
Singapore vermicelli - £17.90
Salt and pepper chips - £6.60
Egg fried rice - £5.40
Curry Sauce - £4.40
TOTAL - £56.20
