As a very fair skinned red-head, this weather we’re currently experiencing is not my idea of a great time. In fact, when Jean nextdoor-but-one catches me on the fronts to say ‘ooh, lovely weather we’ve got, isn’t it’, my returning glare says everything it needs to. No, it’s not lovely. It’s disgusting, actually.
I’m much more accustomed to the milder weather of spring and autumn, seeing as summer sees me spend much of 10am to 4pm indoors with the windows open, curtains drawn, wearing my loosest clothing and applying factor 50. One year, I got hay fever hives so bad I couldn’t go out for weeks, and please don’t speak to me about sunburn.
Over the years I’ve heard some unusual ways to keep cool, such as drinking soup or hot tea when it’s sunny, or placing a bowl of ice in front of the electric fan. But with energy prices rising, many may be reluctant to have the fan on for hours at a time to keep cool.

But earlier this week I spotted a genius hack on TikTok which means I’ve had to dig out the hot water bottle again. That’s right, a few months ago I was telling you h ow to keep warm with an Aldi hot water bottle, and now, I’m going to tell you how to use it to do the exact opposite.
Instead of boiling the kettle and filling your hot water bottle up with hot water, as you would to stay cosy in winter, instead, run the tap cold and fill your water bottle around half full. You could even place in a few ice cubes to make it even colder.
Then, you can place your water bottle back in its pouch and use it to keep yourself from melting in the sweltering heat.
This particular hot water bottle costs £7.99 in Aldi and has a hundy little pocket for you to put your feet into. And as feet help control our bodies overall temperature, keeping your tootsies cool in the heatwave will help stop from overheating when it's 20+ degrees outside.
Working from home, this water bottle hack really did help bring my temperature down throughout the day, and you can easily refill it with cold water when it begins to lose its effectiveness. Plus it’s miles cheaper than having the fan on - because who doesn’t already have a hot water bottle lying around under the bed somewhere?
Its portability means you can use it in any room of the house too, which is definitely more convenient than wrestling with the tower fan up the stairs, and it can even be used outside if you fancy a spot of sunbathing in the garden without feeling too warm.
Some social media users have suggested putting the water bottle in the freezer, however, it’s not recommended to do as the rubber seams can weaken, making it prone to splitting should you then go to fill it with hot water - so just stick to cold water and change it every few hours. But if you did want something frozen, I can recommend the iced cocktails you can make with the Aldi Frozen Drinks Maker.
If you live with other people, your parents, partner or housemates might look at you like you’ve lost the plot until you explain your not trying to boil your insides on the hottest day of the year while cuddling a fluffy not-hot water bottle. Instead, you can spread the sweet relief from the heat with this cooling hack so you won’t need to listen to everyone saying it’s ‘too bloody hot’ for the next six weeks. I, for one, plan on using this hack all summer long in a bid to beat the heat and keep cool without the need for a fan.
