I tried the new McDonald's 'Steakhouse Stack' burger and it wasn't what I expected

I'm always super intrigued to try any new McDonald's burger, so when I saw that the fast food giant was launching a peppercorn sauce burger - I knew I had to give it a go.

Although McDonald's isn't everybody's favourite option, I personally love a cheeky McDonald's, especially after a night out. Whether it's a Big Mac or my recent new favourite, the Double Quarterpounder with Cheese - McDonald's always gets my vote.

The new 'McDonald's Steakhouse Stack' is priced at a whopping £5.39, which is a pretty gourmet price to say the least - but what does it include? I purchased the McDonald's Steakhouse Stack Burger meal to see what all the fuss was about, and here's what I thought.

The McDonald's Steakhouse Stack burger

The new burger includes two 100% beef patties, a slice of cheddar cheese, crispy onions, red onions and lettuce, and is topped with a creamy peppercorn sauce. Its all freshly toasted in a glaze sesame split bun.

I wasn't too sure what to expect with this burger, considering peppercorn sauce as a topping is pretty unique, but I had relatively high hopes. I was a little worried the peppercorn sauce would be lumpy and thick, like what you get on a steak, but it wasn't what I expected at all.

In fact, the peppercorn sauce was lovely and smooth, and was spread on the burger itself very evenly. After one big bite, you could instantly taste the peppercorn sauce, which had quite a big kick to it.

In terms of aesthetics, the burger looked quite posh, but it did look a bit messy once I took the top bun off. The peppercorn sauce was a bit of a strange grey colour which was a bit off-putting, but realistically, not many people actually open and inspect the contents of the burger like I did for the purpose of this review.

The cheddar cheese was nice but it could've been a bit better if it was more melted on the burger. I also really liked the crispy onions that complemented the juicy beef patty really well.

I would say that this burger was a lot spicier than I thought it would be, which could be a downside for some. Of course, it wasn't on the McSpicy level in terms of heat, but it still had a genuine kick that I wasn't expecting.

The bun definitely offered a bit of a 'premium' vibe as opposed to the standard buns that can often be a bit soggy. Thankfully, the burger wasn't too messy to eat either, unlike the McPlant which was messy to say the least.

The verdict

This burger actually ended up being a lot nicer than I thought it would be. I definitely wasn't expecting the peppercorn sauce to be the way it was, but it was definitely a bonus.

I'm glad that the peppercorn sauce wasn't lumpy, and it worked really well with the burger patty. Despite there being two burgers, it didn't seem too big or heavy, with the salad and crispy onions adding a nice crunch.

As much as I enjoyed this burger, I definitely don't think it's for everyone because it's pretty spicy. For me, really enjoyed all of the different flavours, and I wouldn't hesitate to purchase this one again.

A medium Steakhouse Stack meal will set you back £7.89, with the burger alone costing £6.19. You can find out more about the Steakhouse Stack here - it will be available for a 'limited time only'.
