I tried the 50p 'cheapest chips on Merseyside' and they're worth every penny

Friday, June 2 is National Fish and Chips day, so to get in the spirit of things I headed down to selFish Fish & Chips, in Bromborough, to try out their 50p chips which have proved a big hit with customers hit by the cost of living crisis.

The first thing I noticed when arriving at the shop was a giant sign advertising the 50p chips outside. Owner Boris Bektashev, 35, said he wished the sign were bigger, but that it’s been great for customers as people quite often wander in because of the large advertisement.

I was pleasantly surprised by how many chips actually fit in the bag. You wouldn’t expect such a large amount, especially for the price, but it was more than enough for me.

The chips were light and fluffy and all decently sized. The icing on the cake (or seasoning on the chips) was that the salt and vinegar were added at just the right amount.

The portion and price make it a perfect meal to have while on your lunch break, or even if you just want an afternoon snack.

I noticed during my meal that SelFISH has plenty of regulars. As soon as I got in at 12.03pm, minutes after it opened for the day, there were already people inside and ordering.

While I was there, at least a dozen more people came in to try the 50p chips with nothing but good things to say.

One resident of the area who was on his lunch break said: “I don’t usually go for fish and chips but thought I’d give it a go. I do prefer fish over chips so the portion is a good size for me.”

He added: “There’s not really a decent fish and chip place around here but I’d heard good things.”

Another resident, also in at opening time, stated: “It’s great for lunchtime portions because it’s not too much to eat.

“Fish and chips used to be nice and cheap back in the day so it’s good to see that here it’s available at a better price.”

One woman had stopped off to try the chips on her way to go camping. She had seen queues going round the corner in the past so opted to buy three portions for her and her family.

She said: “We’re about to go on our holidays but my daughter wanted us to stop and try them. It’s perfect for a car journey and a great price.

"I saw it on Facebook the other day and I also saw people queueing out the door to get them so now it’s my chance to try it. You don’t get many of these in Liverpool ONE do you?”

Boris explained that he decided to do the cheap portions to help people.

He added: "We took over not long ago and we've been doing the 50p chips mainly for the elderly for quite a long time now because not many people want to get too many chips and most of them go to waste."

He added: "The thing is, it helps people as well, especially with kids. And these days all the prices are too high. So every little helps, as they say."

I absolutely agree with Boris. The reasonable price along with the lovely flavour makes SelFISH a place I would definitely visit again.
