Just as the UK's latest heatwave had begun to ease, forecasters are warning temperatures could climb back to around 35C in parts of the country again this week. If you've spent the past few months sleeping with every window open, carrying a handheld fan everywhere you go and strategically positioning yourself in front of anything that blows cold air, you're probably already thinking ahead.
I've tested more portable fans and air conditioners over the years than I can count, in search of something that genuinely makes hot weather more bearable. While handheld fans are useful in a pinch, it's surprisingly difficult to find one that delivers more than a lukewarm breeze or survives beyond a single summer.
