Lurpak has soared in price over the past year, with the butter now costing so much stores are placing security tags on tubs
After costs peaked at £7 for a 750g pack, the Danish brand was forced to issue a statement explaining why prices were so high. They said “Prices on the shelves have had to rise in recent months. We understand that recent inflation in food price is hitting many households really hard right now.”
“Unfortunately, our farmers are facing a similar situation with prices for feed, fertiliser and fuel they need to produce milk, all rising significantly in recent months.” So we decided we would try one of the many ‘dupes’ now on the market to see if you can get pretty much the same thing for a small fraction of the price.

I headed down to my local Aldi to see if they had any of their Lurpak ‘dupe’ Nordpak I could try - which they did. A 500g tub of Nordpack cost me just £2.29, which is a much more reasonable price than Lurpak's £5.
If I was going to make a fair judgment, the best way to try out the taste, and how it compared to the real Lurpak, was to make some buttery toast.
The first thing I noticed once my bread was toasted, was how solid the butter felt. The consistency was good and had all the ingredients of what Lurpak was like. Spreading it on the toast was easy despite the more solid form it was in the tub.

Now time for the taste test. In all honesty, I couldn’t really tell much of a difference. Yes it wasn’t as strong tasting as that of the original Lurpak but it was a pretty good dupe.
So for those wanting to buy Lurpak tasting butter for half the price of the real thing, Aldi’s ‘dupe’ Nordpak is a decent substitute and will save you a few pennies.
