I tried a vegan bacon sandwich compared to an actual bacon sandwich for Veganuary

Now we’re in January, many people will be starting trying new things. And for some, that could mean trying out Veganuary for the very first time.

I decided that I would do a bit of trying out some vegan foods myself. One of the most popular foods to treat yourself to in the morning is the classic bacon sandwich. As a life-long meat eater, I always feel a bit wary of trying things that aren’t what they should be, especially 'meat' products that actually aren’t.

I popped down to my local store to see what bacon they had to offer for my comparison. For actual bacon I went with a pack of smoked back bacon, for the vegan one I didn’t have any choice as they only had one option - Richmond streaky bacon.

The first thing you notice upon opening the two packets is the way they look. The vegan bacon almost looks almost plastic, the rashers are a lot smaller and it is quite obviously the non-meat one. As for the normal bacon, it has different textures and isn’t completely smooth like the vegan one is.

Another big difference between the two types of bacon is that they have different cooking times, although this is kind of expected as one is raw meat. Under the grill, the vegan bacon takes around 3-4 minutes to cook while the actual bacon takes between 4 and 6 minutes but can take longer the crispier you want it.

When making the bacon sandwiches I buttered both the same and added my ketchup like I normally do before adding the cooked bacon.

I started with vegan bacon as I’ve never tried it before. I’ll be honest, I don’t see myself trying vegan bacon again. I found the texture to be quite chewy and weird, the taste, while slightly smoky, had an aftertaste that I wasn’t fond of. There was a slight smell to the bacon as well, but that too was not the nicest.

As for the normal bacon, which is the actual pack I would normally buy, the smoky taste was a lot stronger and tasted a lot better. The texture of the actual bacon was a lot better, there was a crispiness that the vegan one just didn’t have.

Overall, I have to say that while I am open to trying vegan food, vegan bacon is one thing I will definitely not be going back to. I will 100 percent be sticking to my actual smoky bacon for my bacon sandwiches.
