'I took 40 balls to get off the mark': Sunil Gavaskar's ultimate praise for Glenn Maxwell

NEW DELHI: As Glenn Maxwell smoked the fastest-ever ODI World Cup century on Wednesday against Netherlands -- off just 40 balls -- legendary Sunil Gavaskar was in all praise of the swashbuckling all-rounder.

The 35-year-old was in carnage mode against Dutch in the national capital as he hammered 9 fours and 8 sixes on his way to a mind-boggling 44-ball 106.

Gavaskar who has been part of the ODI World Cup as a commentator was wowed by the sheer brilliance of Maxwell and hailed the stupendous power-hitting skills of the Aussie middle-order batter.

During his blitz, Maxwell also showcased a wide array of shots that included a reverse-sweep for a six and Gavaskar was absolutely stunned by the remarkable hitting abilities of Maxwell.

"This one (Reverse hit) has got to be one of the greatest cricketing shots. It's gone for six. It should be a 12. The bowling after that got a bit rattled because they just didn't know where to bowl. It was an incredible effort. He had an average of 12, to score the runs that he did and at the rate at which he did. It was amazing," said Gavaskar on Star Sports.

"I took 40 balls to get off the mark. He has scored a hundred in 40 balls, amazing, amazing," he added.

Maxwell and David Warner tons helped Australia thrash the Dutch by 309 runs. The win for Australia was the biggest-ever by runs in the history of the ODI World Cup.
