'I thought I was going to die': Mum's trauma after claims placenta was 'left inside her' for two days after giving birth

A mum who claims the placenta was left inside of her body for two days after she gave birth at Bolton Royal Hospital says she feared she might die. Edyta Dobrzańska, 27, claims medical professionals at the hospital in Farnworth failed to acknowledge her concerns that something wasn't right after she gave birth to her baby daughter prematurely last month.

Despite informing nurses that she was in 'extreme' pain, the mum-of-two from Westhoughton claims she was assured everything was fine, and was left in the same condition for two days. She was given morphine and strong medication, but told staff she 'didn't feel like herself'.

Two days after giving birth, Edyta began feeling a sensation similar to labour contractions and had to call for immediate assistance. It was only then she claims doctors realised the placenta was still inside of her, and helped her give birth to it.

Speaking of her trauma, the mum says she had to call her partner as she feared she wouldn't survive due to the pain she had been experiencing. She says she now suffers frequent panic attacks as a result of what happened. She told the Manchester Evening News she feels 'lucky to be alive'.

Bosses at Bolton NHS Foundation Trust have since apologised for Edyta's experience, and confirmed an investigation had been launched in relation to the incident. The mum was admitted to Bolton Royal Hospital on April 27, and gave birth to her daughter by C-section in the early hours of the 28th.

She claims she was told by medical professionals that despite her baby being born prematurely, the procedure had gone well and everything was as it should have been. "After I left the theatre I was taken to another ward. I am not satisfied with the care I received as I was left in extreme pain for the next two days," she said.

"I was informing the nurses about how bad I felt but I was assured that everything was fine and they checked my stomach and assured me everything is as it should be. After reporting the pain a few times I was given morphine and strong drugs which left me feeling exhausted.

"I didn't feel like myself and I felt something was wrong. My stomach didn't look normal and I seriously didn't know if I would be alive the next day. That night I rang my partner and told him to look after our children because I genuinely didn't think I was going to wake up the next day."

Edyta says that on April 30 she went to visit her baby in the neonatal unit. But she claims as she sat down she began experiencing contraction pains and was unable to move. "It was really strange and I didn't know what was happening," she said.

"I rang for help and someone came and took me back to the ward upstairs and they asked for a doctor to come and review me. She examined me and said she could feel something and she asked me to push and I gave birth to the placenta. Afterwards they apologised and I spoke to one of the doctors and they said that this was very rare and shouldn't have happened."

The mum has been allowed to return home with her baby daughter but says she has been deeply affected by her 'traumatic experience'. She added: "I am still suffering from panic attacks at night and in the daytime. I keep waking up in the night feeling like I can't breathe and I have to go downstairs and get a drink and control my breathing.

"There's obviously a lot of trauma. I have formally complained to the hospital but right now I am just grateful to be home with my family because I didn't know if I'd see them again."

Francis Andrews, Medical Director at Bolton NHS Foundation Trust, said: "We are so sorry to hear of Edyta’s experience. We will listen to Edyta’s concerns, provide her with support and investigate this incident."
