I Swear director criticises BBC over handling of Baftas controversy

  • Tourette’s activist John Davidson involuntarily shouted a racial slur during the Bafta awards ceremony, which was broadcast by the BBC.
  • Davidson, whose life inspired the film I Swear, was in attendance as the film won two accolades, including Best Actor for Robert Aramayo.
  • The incident occurred while two Black actors, Michael B Jordan and Delroy Lindo, were on stage, sparking an online debate about racism and Bafta's handling.
  • Kirk Jones, writer and director of I Swear, stated Davidson was “let down on many, many levels” and criticised the BBC for broadcasting the tic.
  • Jones suggested that if the tic had not been broadcast, Bafta could have apologised privately to attendees, preventing wider public knowledge and online circulation of the clip.
