A mum has sparked an interesting debate on parenting techniques, after revealing she used the 'cry it out' method with her daughter - who now sleeps through perfectly every night.
Mum Rosy took to TikTok where she revealed she used the method - which involves leaving your baby to fuss and cry without checking on them - when her daughter Violet-Blue was just six-months-old.
The TikToker says she left the youngster to fuss in her cot every night for a week, and she has slept through perfectly ever since.
"Sleep training/cry it out might not be for everyone," she explained in a clip, posted from her handle @luljxta, "but I did it for just a week when she was six months old and since then this is how easy bedtime is."
In the clip, Rosy can be seen placing Violet-Blue in her cot while she's wide awake, with a bottle of milk, before turning out the lights and leaving the room, adding: "She then sleeps through till 8am."
However, while the mum clearly demonstrated that the method works well for her family, many disapproving TikTokers took to the comments section to criticise the technique.
"Sleep training and cry it out are two completely different things. Sleep training they learn to go to sleep on their own. Leaving them to cry is neglect," one person argued.
Another added: "Parenting is literally going backwards, even with research and scientific evidence."
"No way could I ever, they are so little why would you not want to cuddle them to sleep when they are that little," a third commented, to which Rosy responded: "Because being a single parent is so hard and after waking up every hour to cuddle them to sleep you start to lose your mind."
Meanwhile, others were more supportive, with one commenting: "My mother did this and I've turned out just fine and no 'trauma' from being left to cry it out. She's beautiful."
The cry it out method is a divisive sleep training technique, which is also known as the extinction method. The goal is to teach the child to fall asleep on their own, without needing to be fed or be in their parents arms.
