I spent £15 on a roast dinner at Papillon on Hope Street and I'd definitely do it again - review

It's New Year's Day but it's also a Sunday and that means it's time for a roast dinner.

Despite being a vegetarian, a roast dinner is easily, unquestionably one of my most favourite meals. A mountain of potatoes, fluffy Yorkshire pudding, a medley of vegetables, a dollop of stuffing, and a generous lashing of gravy; it's complete perfection in my eyes.

A roast dinner is the ultimate comfort food and whenever I'm feeling nostalgic or a little glum, venturing out for a Sunday roast can really help turn my mood.

If, like me, you're not quite ready to embark on a post-Christmas health food kick, then tucking into this quintessentially British dish may be just what you need - especially if you're feeling a little tender from last night's antics.

I ventured to Papillon, a beautiful pink paradise occupying a spacious corner plot on Liverpool's iconic Hope Street, to get my roast dinner fix. The menu is sure to delight meat eaters, vegetarians and vegans alike with suitable roast options for all dietary requirements and lifestyle choices.

My partner and I both opted for a vegan friendly Sunday roast, comprising a Gluten Free Pie Company 'pie of the day', with roast rosemary and garlic potatoes, carrot mash, green vegetables, a large Yorkshire pudding and gravy. At £15 per portion, it's not the cheapest option but we were incredibly impressed and, as an occasional treat, it's well worth it.

The food was piping hot and well cooked, with light and fluffy potatoes packed with flavour - they were perfectly crispy on the outside and like a wispy cloud on the inside - and an excellent Yorkshire pudding that was just the comforting, stodgy concoction I'd been craving, all without being too heavy.

The portion of vegetables was generous and, thankfully, not too soft - I hate it when the veg on a roast dinner is reduced to mushy slop. The broccoli and green beans still had a satisfying bite to them that worked well when compared with the softness of the potatoes and the Yorkshire pudding.

I like my Sunday roast to practically swim in gravy (you can take the girl out of Yorkshire, but you can't take Yorkshire out of the girl) and there was a decent serving from Papillon. It was seasoned to perfection and heightened all the other flavours vying for attention on my plate.

Papillon is a large enough venue that even when it's busy, there's still enough space to enjoy the delicious food in peace. The décor is beautiful, with rustic wooden floors made modern when juxtaposed with industrial lighting, colourful tiles, marble tables and plenty of plants adding pops of vibrant green.

Though this was an expensive Sunday roast, I thoroughly enjoyed every single bite and I'll definitely be back - if I could afford it, I'd be there every single Sunday. Papillon is based at 31 Hope Street, Liverpool, L1 9BQ. You can make an online booking here.
