'I saved up £40,000 in two years so I could buy my struggling mum a house'

A man who saved up £40,000 over two years has now bought his mum a house after fulfilling his childhood promise. Will Hemming, 32, was just 11 years old when he told his mum Vivienne: 'Mum, when I grow up, I’ll buy you a house.'

Two decades on, Will, who works as a creative director in London, has now surprised his single mum with her own two-bed house after she had been struggling to pay her rent. Will saved an average of £1,600 per month over approximately two years, amounting to a total of £40,000.

His mum Vivienne, a 69-year-old banqueting manager, was forced to sell her family home in 2018 after her marriage broke down, and she was later diagnosed with breast cancer. Since then she has struggled to afford her rent and has lived in three different properties, owing one of her landlords £7,000.
