I rushed to Aldi for new Prime restock and it seems the frenzy is over with no queues and no brawls

There was a restock of Prime Hydration today at Aldi supermarkets, an energy drink which has sent some fans into complete fervour.

When it first released at Aldi last year, scores of people queued up outside supermarkets to get their hands on a bottle of the stuff for £1.99. Created by YouTubers Logan Paul and KSI, the drink has been particularly popular among younger people.

It was sought after to the extent that shops like Yorkshire's Wakey Wines were able to sell bottles for insane prices like £100 each. In videos from the Wakefield corner shop, people travelled from across the country to get their hands on a taste. And in video clips of the drink arriving in Aldi last December people were frantically clambering over eachother to get it and fights even broke out.

So on Tuesday (April 18), I headed up to an Aldi in Leeds to see if people were waiting outside to get Prime for £1.99, in the hopes of chatting to them and finding out the appeal. What actually happened was that there were a few people waiting outside the Aldi I went to before 8am, but most were waiting to do their normal shopping.

The first man in and out of Kirkstall Aldi on Prime restock day was there only to buy two pints of milk. A couple of mums had brought their kids before school to grab the energy drink, but weren't able to chat as they hurried off to do the school run.

So instead, it was decided I would try Prime for myself. There was ample selection in Aldi still around 8.15am and a big choice of more self-explanatory flavours like Lemon & Lime, Blue Raspberry and Tropical Punch, to ones that really could mean anything like 'Hydration' and 'Ice Pop'.

I chose Lemon & Lime, and took it back home to try, feeling embarrassed that every person I walked past might think I was someone who had queued up before 8am to get it (which I suppose, I sort of had).

Prime is made up mostly of coconut water, electrolytes and vitamins, and apparently has no added sugars. The Lemon & Lime version is a slightly off-putting yellow-green coloured liquid.

I'll be brief in my review - it tastes absolutely fine. It tastes exactly like any lemon and lime juice that you would be happy to pay £1.99 for if you like lemon and lime juice.

It does not taste like lemon and lime juice I would queue up outside a shop at 8am for or spend dozens on at Wakey Wines. Perhaps other flavours are worth that, but it's unlikely I'll ever be finding out.

Each to their own though - I salute anyone who feels passionate enough about an energy drink to queue up for it. Go forth to that Special Buy aisle.
