McDonald’s popular Monopoly prize giveaway promotion is back and for many it’s the ideal opportunity to bag a free drink or a bonus McFlurry. However, there are also some pretty big prizes up for grabs — from electric cars to £100,000 in cash — if you can get enough of the right stickers.
Launched on Sept 7, this year’s promotion runs until Oct 18, giving customers just six weeks to peel the stickers from their fries and mozzarella dippers. In previous years, I’ve tried to maximise stickers I get by going large, earning three stickers per menu item. But in one major change this year, the number is two per item, whether they’re medium or large.
So this time you save some cash, as buying a three-piece chicken select meal gets you the same number of stickers as a five-piece meal. I did, however, head in to a store to see how much I could win in one meal, particularly with the new-for-2022 double peel option, where there are more chances to win on the MyMcDonald’s App, too.
What is the Monopoly game at McDonald’s?
This popular promotion was launched in 2005, working in much the same way as the board game. Customers can win prizes by collecting game pieces from menu items. Peeling off the stickers from selected items, customers can instantly win free food, prizes or collect property pieces of the same colour for a bigger prize via the McDonald’s app and online.
How does it work?
Peel on pack: Reveal property or instant prize win
Collect in McDonald’s app: Scan property code to complete set and win
Extra Peel in McDonald’s app: Each property banked in your Monopoly Wallet gives you another chance to win
Both existing and new customers who are signed up to My McDonald’s Rewards also receive a free code to play, as well as being able to earn points on their order.
What did I win?
At my local McDonald’s, I ordered a three-piece chicken meal with a Coke and a Twix McFlurry. This £7 meal would give me eight stickers — plus up to eight digital peels in the app.
I peeled back the tricky sticker from my drink first, after struggling to pick up the corner with my fingernail. After a satisfyingly smooth peel, I flipped it over to reveal two property cards: a green Regent Street and pink Pall Mall. On, then, to the fries — and I "won" a brown Whitechapel Road, meaning I’d only need to find the elusive Old Kent Road to be in with the chance of a prize. Alas, I wasn’t lucky enough to get my hands on it.
Attached to Whitechapel Road was another Pall Mall — a duplicate, which was quickly followed by a second Whitechapel Road. Also on the selects sticker was Marylebone Station, which, if I collected all four stations, could win me a £250 events voucher.
Finally, I peeled the paper from my McFlurry and found a pink Whitehall, meaning I only needed one more pink property to win an experience day. The best prize though, was the instant win Coca-Cola zero sugar or milkshake. I’ll treat myself to a strawberry shake soon — that’s if the machine isn’t broken.
Of course, there’s the double peel chance to win on the app. You can either scan the code or enter it manually, and it will automatically store the property in the app, and offer a bonus prize. Most of my digital prizes were entries into a prize draw, where I, among countless others, could win a Nintendo Switch or an AO.com voucher, or extra Monopoly properties to help me get closer to completing the game.
I did win a one month Paramount+ subscription and a three-month Readly magazines subscription, too.
What to avoid in McDonald’s Monopoly
There are some menu items that do not have gameplay stickers, including the Big Mac and Chicken McNuggets. To get the biggest number of stickers, you have to pick items that come with stickers.

Are there any other ways to maximise McDonald’s Monopoly chances?
There is one genius hack to get two free stickers, but you have to be a student. Those with a student card can get a free McFlurry, Mayo Chicken or Cheeseburger when they buy any extra-value or wrap meal. While Mayo Chickens and Cheeseburgers don’t come with stickers, the McFlurry’s do, so it’s worth adding to your order for an extra chance to win.
Also there are already several online McDonald's sticker swap accounts where members can trade their stickers to maximise the possibility of a bigger win. One such site has gathered more than 11,000 members in the space of a few days — but you will need to be completely confident about such sites before investing any time in them.
