'I must like the place': Ali Crawford targets more scoring success in the city of Dundee

Ali Crawford has enjoyed his visits to the City of Discovery this season.

Now the St Johnstone midfielder is planning to embark on his latest goal-scoring expedition.

Crawford netted against Dundee United and this weekend’s opponents Dundee earlier in the campaign.

With much on the line in the fight for survival, adding another at Dens Park tomorrow could not arrive at a better time.

“I must like the place,” Crawford smiled of his success in the city. “Hopefully that continues on Saturday at Dens.

“It’s only this season though. Before the quarter final win the boys were taking the mickey out of me because I hadn’t scored at either Dens Park or Tannadice.

“But I have put that right this season and hopefully Dens is one of my lucky places to go now.”

Crawford has chipped in with a few important goals this season - including a last-gasp winner at Livingston.

“I’d like to score more and hopefully I can get a few more winners in the last five games to keep us up,” he said.

“As long as I am in the right position when the ball falls to me in the box I am more than capable of sticking it away.

“I have shown that but I don’t really care who scores on Saturday as long as we get the win.

“That’s the most important thing.”

Saints, set to be backed by around 2000 supporters at Dens Park, will move eight points clear of bottom of the table Dundee if a victory is secured.

“We know the situation both teams are in and we are desperate to go there and get the three points,” Crawford said. "That is all that is in our minds at the moment.

“We want to stay up automatically so, if we win, the week after we face St Mirren at home and can close the gap even further. We need to take Saturday first though.

“I think it helps if we have something to chase. It gives us that slim chance of catching the teams above us.

“That is always good to have and gives us something else to play for rather than looking behind us.

“Our full focus has to be on Dundee and taking maximum points back to Perth.

“There are still four games to play and everybody is playing each other.

“It is not mathematically over but it would be a big blow to their chances of catching us.”

Crawford, of course, is expecting Dundee to be fired up - but Saints need no additional motivation for this one.

“The first half of the season just wasn’t good enough but since coming back from the break in January it has been dramatically better,” he noted.

“That is going to stand us in good stead for the remaining five games.

“Take out the Celtic game and we have played well and got good results.

“So the guys are ready and raring to go. Hopefully we can get the three points.

“We need to be ready for them looking for a fast start and 100 per cent we are ready to go ourselves.

“Our previous two home games against Motherwell and Livingston were scrappy with lots of fighting to get the wins. We have shown we are more than capable of standing up for ourselves.”
