'I made a joke about my brother's divorce after he body shamed my wife'

A man who opened his home to his recently divorced brother was left fuming after he claimed that his wife had “let herself go.”

Eventually, in a bid to stop the cruel comments he sniped back by making a heated quip about his "nasty divorce".

His wife used to work as a sports model, at which point she was severely underweight due to the strict diet she was expected to stick to.

Nowadays, she's said to be "much happier", having gained a healthy amount of weight and muscle.

His brother, who he calls Chris, is said to be "extremely wealthy" but - due to his recent divorce - has been staying with them for a few weeks before moving to his new home. During this time, he's been less than respectful.

Taking to Reddit, the furious man recalled: "Chris, to put it simply, has a 'type.' He believes that every woman should subscribe to his type.

"Any woman who doesn’t fit his preference is automatically ugly and unloveable. He wants all women to conform to his standards, hell or high water.

"Two days ago, Chris found some of Elle’s old magazine covers and commented on how beautiful she was back then. It’s a harmless comment, sure, but he kept bringing up how much 'she’s let herself go'. I mean, kept bringing it up."

According to this man, who posts under the username u/BrotherDivorceAITA, Chris made uncalled for criticisms when Elle headed out for her evening run, telling her “run fast enough to lose all the flabby bits."

Elle simply rolled her eyes at this and laughed, but he didn't find this funny at all, telling his brother to "shut up."

Similar remarks were made when Elle went to the gym the next day, after which the unnamed man once again told him to stop his fixation with his wife's body.

Elle remained unphased, having grown "used to it", but her husband eventually reached a breaking point after one particularly personal 'joke'.

He continued: "When Elle served him food, he made a joke about paying for her tummy tuck so that 'I can marry the right version of Elle.' (The right version is the skinnier version of her.) That comment set me off.

"I told him that 'his wife married the wrong version of him' and to pack his s*** and leave my house. He did not take kindly to this and complained about how insensitive I was to his situation and how I made a low blow.

"He eventually left, but Elle tells me that I could have kicked him out without the comment."

He's now wondering whether he could have asked his brother to leave without retaliating in this way, turning to fellow Reddit users for advice.

One person wrote: "Ok, it was a low blow about his divorce but given the revolting nature of his comments and the fact that he explicitly insulted your wife - while you are putting a roof over his head - makes it understandable.

"You are only human. You were far more polite than I would have been."

Another said: "Your wife’s responses are likely a coping mechanism from many years of prejudice and sexual discrimination. You have a right and responsibility as a spouse to be upset and protect your wife from harm which you did.

"Your brother appears to have very little awareness of his own behaviours which I imagine contributed to his divorce in the first place. He will either keep up this behaviour until he has no relationships at all or eventually fixes himself.

"Either way, you are not obligated to be around that type of mess to find out."
