Finding a job in this economy is tough, in fact it’s more than tough, sometimes it feels downright impossible. But that doesn’t mean people have to put up with toxic work conditions. One woman on TikTok proved as much as she decided not to go to her first shift in a supermarket after hearing the staff’s objectifying comments about her.
TikToker @aimzbakes (Amy) shared her story on the app, explaining in the caption that she had decided to ghost her first shift at a supermarket after a terrible interview in which she heard staff talking about her and another candidate in a “yucky objectifying” way. In the audio used in her video a voice can be heard saying, “I’m not doing this. I just realized I don’t have to.”
She also addressed the other candidate in the caption writing, “if you’re a blonde who recently had a job interview at iceland then sorry girl they were saying really gross things.”
It’s easy to understand why Amy made the decision to simply not show up to her shift. Nobody would feel comfortable working with staff who talk about people like that but the problem is especially prevalent for women who are often expected to put up with sexist and objectifying “banter” in order to fit in.
TikTok mostly agreed with her decision
In the comments many wrote messages which supported Amy’s decision, “They’re regressive assholes and you deserve to work somewhere that respects you,” wrote one person adding, “I’m so proud of you for telling them to get lost.” Others encouraged Amy to call the head office and report the incident.
However, a few suggested it may have been a mistake considering how difficult it is to find a job anywhere at the moment. While they sympathized with the tough situation Amy was in, their argument essentially boiled down to “with this job market you’ve got to take it.”
It’s true, the job market isn’t exactly thriving right now, plenty of people have found themselves struggling to find work in even the most easy to access industries such as hospitality and retail. Many have found themselves in situations that take advantage of their labor or simply fire them after a single shift without any explanation.
But still, this doesn’t mean that this behavior from the other staff members should be excused or allowed to continue. Most are in agreement that Amy made the right decision for herself, and while it may not solve her job problem, as long as she continues to search she will hopefully find somewhere less toxic.
