As the ongoing cost of living crisis continues to put a pinch on households, many are looking at different ways they can use their appliances more efficiently to cut down on costs.
In the kitchen, dishwashers can be one of the more costly devices to run, but many people choose to ignore this because they are just so convenient. While a lot of people may think that washing by hand is the cheaper option, this just is not the case.
According to experts, once your dishwasher is used properly it can be both more hygienic and use less water when compared to washing by hand.

A standard-sized dishwasher uses, on average, 12 litres of water per cycle, only using and heating the exact amount needed, however, running the tap uses about six litres of water a minute.
Even with this, there are more ways to cut down on the cost of using a dishwasher, with appliance website ESpares sharing some easy ways to save money when using your dishwasher.
According to ESpares, one of the most important steps is to make sure you load your dishwasher properly, otherwise, items are at risk of not being cleaned properly due to not being in the most efficient positions. Here is how to load it according to the site:
- Cutlery should go in the basket face up, except knives which should be placed downwards to protect the user. Plates should then be placed on the racks facing inwards, with pans facing both inwards and downwards.
- On the top shelf, all glasses, mugs and bowls should be facing downwards so they don't fill up with dirty water. You can also place large utensils on the top shelf.
- You should also make sure there's nothing blocking the front of the racks, as this can prevent the detergent from properly getting inside the machine.
