As an American, I am utterly and completely charmed by the bucolic passageways, manicured flowers, and antique garden furniture of English estates. There are, however, two problems: first, living in Manhattan (and LA proper before), I do not – and never did – have that kind of outdoor space; and second, faking heritage is not particularly easy to do.
But I just found an antique-style outdoor ‘semi’ table by Safavieh, currently marked down in Amazon’s Big Spring Sale (on through March 31), that comes serendipitously close to solving both. Because it’s only half a circle, it creates the impression of a sprawling backyard space – that carefree, I-have-so-much-outdoor-space-I-don’t-even-know-what-to-do-with-it energy – while sitting neatly flush against a wall and taking up very little room.
This space-saving outdoor accent table makes any patio, deck, or backyard feel far more capacious than it is. It’s also available in dark green, blue, and brown, though the brown and white seen here are currently the most discounted in Amazon’s Big Spring Sale. Complete with antiqued iron detailing, this new-but-convincingly-old table works for small patios chasing that heritage feel, but it’s just as whimsical if you want your outdoor space to read a little easier, a little less cluttered – qualities that, paradoxically, help sell the English manor look.
And while my mind first went to the backyard, it would also be a dream out front: holding a planter on the porch, for instance, for a warm welcome that doesn’t obstruct traffic.
One reviewer even suggested using it as a landing spot for packages, keeping deliveries dry and slightly elevated. ‘The table is quite lovely and Victorian-looking. I love that,’ they add. ‘It is nicely built. It went together in less than 10 minutes.’
At just under 36 inches in diameter and under 19 inches wide, it’s even small enough for my fire escape – perhaps paired with a chair or two, facing the street, watching the tops of the trees sway in the breeze from a third-floor vantage point.
Maybe, with this table, I can romanticize my minuscule outdoor space after all.
Space-Saving Outdoor Tables
For a similar antique English estate feel in a smaller space, these three tables feel equally enchanting.
The coppery finish on this mostly black table, with its ornate floral pattern, could easily pass for far older. Made of sturdy cast aluminum, it’s built to wear well, as reflected in its glowing 4.8-star reviews. Slip it between two outdoor chairs, top it with a floral planter, and consider yourself transported.
With the lower tier, pulling up a chair isn’t really an option here. In fact, this reads more like a shelf, but that’s not necessarily a con. It’s a fabulous front porch furniture accessory: great for plant children, or, as above, a very chic landing spot for packages.
For the full English garden effect, it might make sense to go all in. This Victorian-style bistro set (available in rose and tulip motifs, as well as white) looks just as pretty in a small footprint as it does in a larger one – ideal for afternoon tea among blooming flowers.
