I’m a neat freak. If a day goes by without cleaning at least one room in my apartment, I start to get a little antsy. Needless to say, I take vacuuming seriously, and I know well by now that it’s hard to beat a Dyson vacuum. Because of their powerful motors and cordless designs, I’ve fallen in love with the brand’s devices. And just last year, I finally tried what’s now my absolute favorite vacuum to date: the Dyson Gen5detect Cordless Vacuum.

Yes, it is still a very expensive vacuum, but there are several features that set the Gen5detect apart from the rest. Let’s first chat about that laser. Featured on the brand’s so-called Fluffy Optic cleaner head that’s meant for tile and hardwood floors, the laser illuminates the floor ahead, revealing all the previously invisible bits of dust, dirt, hair, and more in the vacuum’s path. After a single pass, you can immediately see that all those tiny particles have vanished. It offers an immediate, before-and-after satisfaction that a clean freak will deeply appreciate.
Whenever I use it in my kitchen, I am truly shocked and appalled at all the little droppings and crumbs I had never noticed before. And the machine does a fantastic job at cleaning them all up every time.
There’s also the screen display at the top of the vacuum that gives a full breakdown of what types of debris the vacuum is detecting and the volume of particles it’s removing as you clean, which helps you know when to move on to another area. The screen is where you see the power mode (which automatically adjusts according to the flooring type), maintenance alerts, and the remaining battery time. Speaking of battery time, this machine can run up to 70 minutes on a single charge, which is longer than most cordless vacuums.
As with any Dyson vacuum, it comes with various cleaner heads in addition to the iconic-to-me Fluffy Optic head. There’s the Digital Motorbar head that can handle everything from thick shag carpets to thin rugs, a hair screw tool that’s great for both human and pet hair, and a dusting and crevice tool that can get into hard-to-reach areas. For years, I thought I had a cat who really didn’t shed that much, but this vacuum has shown me that, yes, she does shed, and all that hair was just living in the corners of my rooms.
I’m far from the Gen5detect’s only superfan. Countless reviews from fellow Dyson devotees note that this particular vacuum is just different (and in many ways better) than the other models out there. As one reviewer wrote: “Dyson has truly achieved a next level in innovation and product design. If you think your floors are clean now, you are WRONG! I use my Gen5 almost daily and every time I am surprised how much it picks up. I really love the new display showing you when the floor is clean. If I was not limited by battery life I would vacuum for hours every day!”
