As non-working royals, the couple do not make any money from royal engagements, nor do they take any taxpayer money for funding to support their lifestyle.

So how did Mike make his fortune and what is he up to now he has retired from rugby?

Rugby career

Mike played professional rugby for 17 years, from the age of 18 until he retired aged 35 in 2014.

During that time he won 75 caps for England and was part of the winning 2003 World Cup squad.

Figures released in the Premiership Rugby Salary Cap report for 2020/2021 reveal Centre players, which Mike was, can earn £167,779 a year. While players with more than 50 international caps receive £325,306 on average.

After hanging up his boots Mike went on to work as a coach for his former club Gloucester, where he is thought to earn between £100,000 and £200,000 a year.

Sponsorship and ad deals

Mike’s rugby career set him up for lucrative sponsorship and brand deals - and reports suggest he and wife Zara could be raking in up to £1 million a year each from this alone, according to Ruck.

The pair have landed deals with the likes of luxury watchmakers Rolex, car company Land Rover and Pueris CBD, a company selling cannabis oil products. He is also a brand ambassador for online trading platform, UFXMarkets.

In recent weeks, Mike has even popped up in ads for Domino’s Pizza and Amazon Prime.

Brand expert Nick Ede told MailOnline : “With these kind of ad deals, Mike Tindall will be making around £300,000 for the Domino’s advert. For the Amazon, which he is not in as much, around £150,000.”

He also hosts a podcast, The Good, The Bad and The Rugby alongside pals James Haskell and Alex Payne, which brings in sponsorship deals.

Celebrity appearances

In addition to deals with big brands, Mike could earn tens of thousands from one-off celebrity appearances.

He is a popular booking for after dinner speeches, where he talks about his rugby career.

The former rugby player has his own company, Kimble Trading Ltd, which oversees his business activities including his public speaking and celebrity appearances.

It is thought he takes home a six-figure salary from this, but his company came under fire when it was revealed it received furlough money during the pandemic.

Accounts for his firm state: “The outbreak of Covid-19 and subsequent restrictions imposed have led to a number of events in 2020 being cancelled.

“The company has taken advantage of all the available government aid in order to support the business and its employees through the crisis.”
