I'm a Celeb's Mike Tindall drank nearly 50 lagers on Australia flight in bid to break record

Mike Tindall might have a few weeks in the jungle in Australia ahead of him, but it's his eventual flight home from Oz that could be box office if his past is anything to go by.

The former England international is part of the cast for the latest edition of I'm a Celebrity , meaning he'll be coupled up in Queensland with the likes of former Health Secretary Matt Hancock and radio DJ Chris Moyles. Tindall is married to Zara Phillips, daughter off Princess Anne, making him the first member of the royal family to appear in the jungle.

But he's best known for his career in the oval ball game, winning 75 caps for his country and famously playing in the 2003 World Cup final, where England beat Australia 20-17 thanks to Jonny Wilkinson's extra time drop goal. Tindall himself had his own iconic moment that night in Sydney, picking up home Wallaby skipper George Gregan in a thunderous tackle - but his post-tournament celebrations were arguably more iconic.

On the plane back to Heathrow, Tindall came close to former Australian cricketer David Boon's legendary record of 52 cans of lager on a flight to England. Boon's bender came on a 1989 flight from Sydney to London, ahead of that summer's Ashes series.

The moustached batsman then came down the steps and walked completed unhindered into the airport. And a source told The Mirror that despite his best efforts, Tindall's session ended when he'd sunk "close to 50" beers.

Indeed, Will Greenwood later confirmed that his midfield partner had fallen short: "You can rest assured David Boon's record is still standing," he said. "Tinds had a real go at it but we wanted to leave the Aussies with at least one title to hang on to."

Eight years later however, and Tindall's drunken World Cup antics weren't greeted with hilarity. Following England's narrow group stage win over Argentina in Queenstown in New Zealand, he was seen 'dwarf throwing' and filmed flirting with a female admirer at a nightclub.

As a result, he was fined £25,000 by the RFU - later reduced to £15,000 - and was removed from the England elite player squad. He didn't play for his country again following that World Cup.

Tindall, now 44, has been installed as the bookies' favourite to emerge as the winner in the jungle. The star, who married Phillips in 2011, has claimed to have turned down several previous requests to appear.
