'I left my pregnant wife on the train - she's furious but I don't understand'

One husband took to Reddit for reassurance and was destroyed by users after explaining that he had 'ditched' his pregnant wife on a train during their vacation abroad after tasking her with carrying a suitcase and then watching the doors shut on her - but doesn't understand where he went wrong.

In a now-deleted post, the author, a 29-year-old male, explained that he was on holiday with his 25-year-old wife, who was 5 months pregnant at the time. The two were having a lovely time and planning to visit the beach, meaning they had to catch a train.

It doesn't seem like an issue - unless your husband is an a**h***, as the internet has concluded.

After hearing an announcement that the train will be rerouted, he man thought he had to make a quick decision, so he jumped up, told his wife they'll get off at the next step, grabbed the suitcases (all except for one - which he gave to his pregnant wife), and hopped off the train.

Finally turning around to acknowledge his spouse, he found that she was still on the train car, with the doors closing in his face.

The OG poster explains:

"I’m 29 and my wife is 25. She’s also five months pregnant. Recently we decided to go on holiday together - nothing fancy, just to the coast, which meant we had to get a train."

" About twenty minutes into our journey, we heard an announcement over the speakers that the train was being diverted, which meant it wasn’t going to stop at the station we needed anymore. As it was saying this, the train was coming to a stop at the next station."

"I couldn’t believe it when I looked round and saw she hadn’t gotten off - she was trying to grab our third suitcase. Unfortunately it was too late, and even as I rushed to the doors, they closed. My wife looked like she wanted to kill me, and the train pulled away with her on it."

"I called her to tell her to get off at the next stop and I’d get the next one and meet her, but she was absolutely irate and told me the holiday was cancelled and she was going home. To top it off, she told her family and mine and they’re all furious at me for 'abandoning' a pregnant woman on a train 'headed God knows where' with a heavy suitcase."

"My father in law told me I was an idiot for what I’d done. I feel like I was in the right, but my wife and family have other ideas. So Reddit…AITA?"

Well, according to user responses - he absolutely was.

One redditor said: "I don’t want to fully say YTA, it’s more like you’re the dum-dum. You didn’t mean to abandon her and it was obviously a mistake, not malicious.

"You panicked and had a dum-dum moment. Take this as a learning opportunity. Your wife may not be able to keep up with you while she’s pregnant, and it doesn’t stop there!

"Your new baby won’t be able to keep up with you either. You’ll have to adjust and learn to wait up for others once you’re a dad."

Another one chimed in, "Oh boy. YTA. You shouldn't have gotten off without checking she was right behind you. The panic was unnecessary. You'd have been fine at the other stop."

While the original poster answered people in his comments, he mentioned that he is neurodivergent and doesn't always understand signals.

Plenty of other users who are also on the spectrum sounded off on that, with one commenter explaining, "I've seen some of the comments, and as a fellow autistic, I get the panic and how it happened.

"Rushing it and creating the chaos that ended up with her left on the train. You were quick and efficient on your end because you had all the context of what needed to be done, while she was trying to catch up and understand what was happening and why it was so urgent.

"YTA in that regard, and she is probably worrying about how the panic will affect you as a parent down the line."

Catherine942 said it simply: "You were in the right? How? My guy, have you lost your mind? YTA"
