Nobody likes to be laughed at - least of all when they're excited to share some big news with the person that they love. That's why one woman was left devastated when her husband laughed in her face at her baby name choice - despite revealing it to him in an adorable way.
He explained that when his wife shared the name, by adorably giving him a babygrow with it on the back, he "burst out laughing to the point of tears."
To make matters worse, he then learned that it was her late grandfather's name, meaning the reaction was even more hurtful as she wanted to honour him.
He took to Reddit's 'Am I the a**hole' forum to write: "So my (35M) wife (32F) is pregnant. She's due in two weeks and I am beyond excited because this would be my first child and I've always wanted to be a dad. Yesterday, we were in bed together, talking about our baby. All of a sudden she jumps up excited with a huge smile on her face. She told me to stay on the bed because she had a surprise for me.
"She went into our closet and grabbed a box. It was decorated with ribbons and bows so I assumed it was a gift for me. She handed it to me with the same big grin on her face. It was obvious she was excited to see my reaction. I asked her what it was but she just kept on saying 'open it open it!'"
When he opened it, there was a blue onesie with the name 'Bartholomew' in cursive stitched on the middle, and he said he'd trusted her to name her something "normal" - but he didn't feel this name was.
He continued: "I asked her what it meant and she said 'surprise!! That’s going to be his name.' She sounded so happy and enthusiastic so I knew she was serious. I busted out laughing to the point of tears. I honestly could not believe she was going to name our son that. What the hell kind of name is 'Bartholomew'?
"She got really silent and started tearing up. When I noticed this, I sat up and stopped laughing. She snatched the box off me and stomped back to the closet. I asked her if she was serious and she said yes. Apparently, she's decided to name our son after her grandfather who she was very close with before he died."
He referred to the name as "outdated", but she started "yelling" saying he was being judgemental. She was so mad she want to stay with her mum.
He finished the post, writing: "Her dad called me yelling at me because apparently she's told on me. I've been called immature and a joke so far. I'll probably just apologise but there is no way in hell I'm calling my son by that outrageous name. I'm currently thinking of a nickname to call him, any ideas? Am I the a**hole?"
In the comments, people were saying both parents should name a baby, not just one of them, as this exact situation could happen.
Someone wrote: "Names need to be two yeses. She may be carrying the baby, but she doesn't get carte blanche in naming him."
"She's the a**hole for trying to name a kid Bartholomew as a first name", another joked, but someone defended the name: "It's her grandfather's name, who she loved. It doesn't make her an a**hole for wanting her child to have a family name. Even if it's one you don't like."
A Redditor defended the name though, writing: "Yes, had he wanted to be involved in naming the baby, he literally had months to do so.
"Was it really a total shocker that she wanted to name the child after a family member? And lol, has the original poster seriously never met anyone named Bart? It's not that uncommon.
"You're the a**hole for laughing in her face when she was so excited. The original poster could have put the brakes on in a calm matter and discussed it like an adult if he really wanted to break his promise.
"But no, he made her feel like s*** and THAT is the real a**hole move. Does he often 'let' her make decisions, but ONLY if she decides on what he likes?"
