'I know what I'm doing': Hunter company fined over worker's tragic death near Newcastle port

A Hunter Valley demolition company has been ordered to pay more than $180,000 in fines over the death of a labourer employed on its work site near the Port of Newcastle in 2023.

Steve Klus, a 64-year-old grandfather from Summerland Point, died after he was hit in the head by a pole at a Heron Road demolition job just after 3pm on May 31, 2023.
