'I know the position I am in' - James Tavernier responds to Rangers criticism

James Tavernier insists Rangers are getting better and better as he brushed off criticism over his position.

The Ibrox captain had come under scrutiny after being subbed off in the Europa League defeat to Lyon.

However, Tavernier was unaffected as he started in the league win over St Johnstone.

"It's been fine, I know the position I am in," said Tavernier on his response to criticism. "I am on the frontline so I am going to get the criticism but I can fully take it.

"I have been here a long time. It's just about me putting in the performances and trying to lead by example.

"Vac [Vaclav Cerny] pulled off two great goals today and he has been working hard at it.

"We probably missed a little it of our final third but we defended really well.

"It's disappointing to see Ianis getting sent off after coming back but you saw the reception that he got today from the fans. That's great to see.

"It's just about consistency now, getting the points and getting the wins by any means necessary."

Asked is there is something missing to allow for consistency in results and performances for Rangers, he added: "I think in the big games it is just the fine details, being clinical.

"We are a young team, we are gelling still and improving as a squad. We are going to get better and better, it's just taking those fine details in the final third and even defensively trying to keep as many clean sheets as possible."

Meanwhile, goalscorer Cerny admitted he has struggled in front of goal in recent weeks but was thrilled to get back on the scoresheet with a brace at Ibrox.

He said: "Obviously, I have been struggling for the past few games, we all saw that.

"I am very, very happy with those two goals and it was more important that we got the three points."
