
When the war in Sudan began in April 2023, Hamza thought the power struggle would soon end. The 23-year-old entrepreneur was running the family’s successful clothing business and he planned to expand it. Never did he dream he might have to flee to a foreign country where he knew no one, could not speak the language, and would need to start his life over.
But as the battle between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces spread in viciousness and intensity, creating one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises with 25 million people affected and over 3,300 civilians killed, Hamza realised his life was in danger and that he would have to leave. With no idea of where to go and what to do, he escaped over the border into neighbouring Libya.
