I just tried DuckDuckGo’s new anonymous AI photo editor and it’s a game changer

DuckDuckGo logo on phone.

Over the years, DuckDuckGo has built a strong reputation for prioritizing user privacy, allowing you to search with greater peace of mind. These protections now extend to AI image generation and, more recently, to AI image editing.

By using DuckDuckGo’s AI assistant, Duck.ai, you can upload photos without needing to create an account. These images are stripped of their metadata, and the user’s IP address is removed before they are sent to OpenAI, which powers Duck.ai’s model.

For added protection, DuckDuckGo states that all uploaded images are stored locally on your device. This doesn’t appear to impact editing speed either.

The only point to note is that, as reported by 9to5Mac, edited images are labelled with C2PA-compliant metadata, meaning they are tagged as having been modified using AI. This ensures transparency without compromising your privacy.

Overall, it’s a simple and effective way to edit your images without sharing more data than necessary — and it’s easy to use, as we’re about to see.

1. Access Duck.ai

To access DuckDuckGo’s AI assistant, you can open a browser and go to duck.ai. Next, open the sidebar and you will be able to select New Image.

2. Start with an image

To edit an image, you can click Start with an image. This will allow you to upload an image you’d like to work with. Alternatively, you can drag an image into the prompt box. Duck.ai will work with JPEG, JPG, PNG and WebP files.

3. Describe your changes

Now enter a text description of the changes you want to make and select the Send button.

4. Use the image

Once you are happy with the edited image, you can click the copy icon beneath the image or select the download icon to save it to your device. You can also select the i icon to view the prompt used to produce the edited image.
