I just rediscovered ‘Good Neighbours’ on Prime Video — and it's the best dark comedy thriller you've never seen

Scott Speedman, Emily Hampshire, Jay Baruchel.

Finding a movie that strikes a perfect balance between haunting mystery and sharp comedy can be a rare discovery. "Good Neighbours," an obscure 2010 Canadian indie thriller, successfully blends the somber, creepy atmosphere of a serial killer on the loose with a dark comic relief inspired by quirky — and profoundly lonely — neighbors.

Directed by Jacob Tierney and starring Jay Baruchel, Emily Hampshire and Scott Speedman, the film offers a refreshing take on the genre. It is a slow-burn narrative that hooks you early, reeling you into its claustrophobic world and leaving you wanting more as the credits finally roll.

While the backdrop is a city gripped by fear, the heart of the story remains tucked away inside a single, weathered building. Here is a look at why this hidden gem deserves a spot on your watchlist and how it turns the classic whodunit on its head.

What is 'Good Neighbours' about?

The film begins with brief, intimate insights into the lives of three residents in a run-down Montreal apartment complex. The camera pans first to Louise (Emily Hampshire), who begins her day feeding and nuzzling her cats. In a detail that becomes vital as the plot unfolds, her cats escape through an apartment window to traipse down the stairs. We then glimpse Spencer (Scott Speedman), navigating his apartment in a wheelchair, who greets Louise at the door as she delivers his newspaper.

A passing comment is made regarding a local serial killer, though little more is said initially. The quiet tension is interrupted by a newcomer, Victor (Jay Baruchel), whose over-eager friendliness seems to put both Spencer and Louise off. While Spencer maintains a friendly veneer that masks a mysterious edge, Louise can hardly hide her total lack of interest in the newcomer.

The scene shifts to Louise working as a waitress at a local Chinese restaurant. As she peruses the newspapers — presumably searching for updates on the killer — her coworker prattles on. Eventually, the violence hits too close to home when Louise returns to work to find that very coworker has been murdered. Yet, despite the escalating body count, this isn't your classic whodunit. The mystery of the killer’s identity is secondary to the strange, evolving dynamics between these three neighbors.

As the trio grows closer, Victor begins walking Louise home and joins her for dinner with Spencer. Tensions spike when Louise believes she has a run-in with the killer on the apartment’s fire escape. However, it is a personal conflict with another neighbor involving her cats that takes the film in an unusual direction, forcing the audience to wonder if one of the central three might actually be the predator.

Why you should watch 'Good Neighbours' on Prime Video

What makes this film so intriguing is the pervasive ambiguity; you truly cannot say for certain who the killer is. All three protagonists — Victor, Louise and Spencer — exude a sense of suspicion. Even Victor’s well-meaning friendliness takes on a darker ambiance when viewed through the lens of the bleak Montreal setting. When the film finally unfurls to reveal the true killer and a revenge plot takes shape, it becomes clear that no one is truly innocent.

"Good Neighbours" is a testament to the unique charm of indie cinema. Its specific pace, sharp dialogue, and low-budget aesthetic create a story that feels grounded and meaningful. The dark humor peppered throughout elevates the narrative, lifting it above stereotypical thriller tropes. The balance between the unsettling and the entertaining is finely tuned in this thriller.
