In perhaps one of the biggest blows to the Republican Party in recent memory, Democratic socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani won the NYC mayoral election on Wednesday, becoming the city’s first Indian American, first Muslim, and the first millennial (youngest mayor in over a century) mayor-elect. He is set to take the oath of office on January 1, 2026.
Throughout Zohran Mamdani’s campaign ahead of the November 4 elections, he faced severe pushback from New York’s elite classes and others across America. Multiple billionaires poured millions of dollars to oppose Mamdani, mainly because one of his key promises was to tax the rich at higher rates. The same would substantially lower costs like rent and public transportation for the general masses.
Mamdani also naturally faced opposition from Republicans, who tried to paint him as a radical communist, jihadi, and inexperienced. Ahead of the mayoral election, Donald Trump single-handedly took it upon himself to attack Mamdani by negatively discussing him during press briefings and posting about him on the social media platform, Truth Social. Therefore, when, after Mamdani’s victory on Wednesday, he had the opportunity to give it back to Trump, he took it. He responded to Donald Trump’s repeated attacks by addressing him directly during one of his victory celebrations alongside his multiple supporters, including family and friends. Looking into the cameras, Mamdani said to Trump:
So, Donald Trump, since I know you are watching, I have four words for you: ‘Turn the volume up.’ We will hold bad landlords to account because the Donald Trumps of our city have grown far too comfortable taking advantage of their tenants. We will put an end to the culture of corruption that has allowed billionaires like Trump to evade taxes and exploit tax breaks.”
Mamdani’s response to Trump gained attention on social media, including X (formerly Twitter). One user commenting on a video wrote:
How this guy rattled AIPAC, Elon, Trump, Zionist should be studied. I hope he doesn’t give Trump a heart attack.”
Another person praised Mamdani’s resilience and victory, saying:
This is how America is supposed to be made great again. One of the greatest speeches in recent American history from a man who just made history.”
