'I hold them completely responsible' - Gary Neville isn't convinced by major Liverpool change

Gary Neville has criticised Liverpool's defending in their 4-3 win over Tottenham Hotspur and insists they 'can't keep papering over the cracks'.

Liverpool looked defensively frail after powering into a three goal lead in the first 15 minutes and Spurs managed to claw their way back to 3-3 with minutes remaining.

Diogo Jota came to the rescue in the 95th minute to lift the Reds up to fifth place in the Premier League, but Neville is unconvinced by Jurgen Klopp's new formation.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has been in fine form since being given license to roam in the midfield from his right-back role, but Spurs exploited the gaps left by the 24-year-old.

Neville told The Gary Neville Podcast: "They can't keep papering over the cracks, you've got to deal with it properly. Every chance Tottenham had, it felt like it came down that right hand side. I love Trent on the ball, I love when he's on the ball centrally, I love it when he gets on the ball on the right hand side. They aren't going to a back three, Robertson's flying forward as well.

"You're expecting Konate to play right-back and right centre back - that's too big an ask. It can be done. I had Jaap Stam and Rio Ferdinand, who were world class defenders who could do it and quite often me and the other full-back would go forward and they'd deal two vs two with a midfield player back.

"If you're not quite right and your form is not right and you're giving teams encouragement, it just doesn't work like that. You've got to be at the very top of your game to be able to get away with it and Liverpool aren't at that at this moment in time. Liverpool's midfield needs dealing with.

"They aren't pressing like they used to which means you can get at the back four. I played a lot in teams where you could get at our back four, but you still had to do better than that. I hold them completely responsible for this."
