A woman was told no ambulances would be available to help her grandad after he fell and broke his hip. Nicole Lea ended up strapping him to a plank of wood and driving him to hospital in the back of a van.
Ms Lea from Pontypool said she found 89-year-old Melvyn Ryan lying on the floor at his home in Cwmbran in the early hours of Friday morning (December 9). She had been alerted to his fall by a call from the emergency lifeline button round the pensioner's neck.
When she arrived, she discovered he'd also suffered a broken shoulder and was bleeding from a cut to his head. However, when she called 999 for an ambulance she was told none were available and that no one would be coming to help.
