I got £8 worth of Greggs pasties and bakes for £2.59 with free food waste app

When I shared my review of a Too Good To Go bag from Morrisons, dozens of other app users commented that it was another retailer who offered the best value mystery goodies. Best known for their steak bakes and vegan sausage rolls, northern bakery chain Greggs are also a partner with the food waste app.

Too Good to Go works with retailers and businesses who sell food items that would be otherwise thrown away at the end of a shift, and flog them for a snippet of the price.

Just last week, I bagged a full roast dinner from Toby Carvery for £3.29 - Yorkshire pudding included.

There are a few drawbacks of course. Firstly, you don’t get to choose what’s in the bag, so those on vegan diets or with allergy requirements are a little excluded from fighting food waste in the community.

Secondly, the collection times are usually in the hour before the store’s closing times. For Toby Carvery, it was 9pm.

But when I reserved my £2.59 Greggs magic bag, it promised me £8 worth of goodies that I could collect at 5.15pm - perfect timing as it was straight after my shift.

They’d received high praise from MEN readers, with one commenting: “Greggs magic bags are amazing! I've also had them from Costa, which have been good and Starbucks.”

Another said: “Greggs are normally the best ones. Costa are pretty good too.”

“Greggs ones are the best,” a third reader added. “Got one at the weekend and go do much in it for £2.60. It was supposed to be £8 with but it was way more”

As I headed up to the counter, based inside a petrol station, there was already a line of magic bags on the back counter waiting to be collected.

It appears I was one of five lucky people to bag one - pardon the pun - on this particular day.

When I got back to my car I simply couldn’t wait to see what was inside, as the bag seemed pretty well filled.

Inside, I found a sealed cheese sandwich that was going out of date the following day, ideal for an on the go lunch.

Then there was a chicken bake, which was still warm and was consumed almost instantly. Chicken breast pieces in a creamy white sauce wrapped in puff pastry, this would usually cost around £1.45 depending on where you buy it.

And if I hadn’t already saved myself some cash, I struck gold with the next two items.

Two large boxes filled the bottom of the bag, one filled with two sugar ring doughnuts, and another with four caramel custard filled doughnuts.

All of the items were in date, and usually, the caramel custard doughnuts are 95p each, so I definitely got my money’s worth just with these.

I came away feeling pretty pleased with my haul, and was able to brighten a friend’s day with a box of the doughnuts too.
