I filled up at the Costco petrol station everyone queues up for and with prices like these I can see why it's so popular

Fuel prices remain high and drivers are becoming increasingly frustrated over how much it's costing to fill a tank.

While we can only dream about the £1 a litre prices that came during the pandemic, over recent months that cost has almost doubled.

Despite the average price falling in July, with RAC figures showing a litre of unleaded petrol at 175.24p, it's still a lot more than we used to pay and it's hitting people hard.

People have been queuing for the cheaper fuel (Manchester Family / MEN)

That's why anywhere selling it cheaper has become a magnet to cash-strapped drivers. One such place is Costco petrol station in Trafford Park, just across from The Trafford Centre.

With that in mind I headed there this week to fill up my Dacia to see how much I could save. The queue when I arrived was the biggest indicator that it's selling fuel cheaper than elsewhere and I was impressed to see on the sign driving in that it's down to 159.7p for unleaded and 173.7p for diesel.

Thankfully the queue moved fairly quick, helped by the fact that each station is a 'pay at pump', as there is no kiosk to slow things down.

At Asda's petrol station just next door, the prices were 171.7p and 182.7p respectively. Having checked other supermarkets the same day, on Wednesday, all of them were significantly higher, including...

  • Morrisons - 169.7p unleaded / 181.7p diesel
  • Sainsbury's - 169.9p unleaded / 180.9p diesel
  • Tesco - 171.9p unleaded / 183.9p diesel

Just over 45 litres of unleaded cost me £72.28. Had I filled up at the nearby Asda, it would have cost me almost £78 - a difference of 7.5%.

It might not sound like that much, but it soon adds up when you're making regular trips to the pumps.

And judging by the queuing cars, I'm obviously not the only one thinking I'll take every saving I can get.
