'I despise the Leaving Cert' - RTE's Ryan Tubridy blasts State exam as 'cruel' system

RTE star Ryan Tubridy has taken a swipe at the 'awful' Leaving Certificate system as thousands of students prepare for their State exams in the coming days.

Ryan made the comments as he returned to the RTE airwaves after a week’s holiday in sunny Connemara following his final ever Late Late Show at the end of last month.

Ryan had a pop at the “annoying” Leaving Cert, which starts on Wednesday, describing what students are facing as akin to “war."

“I despise the Leaving Certificate as an exam. I think it’s cruel and it’s mean and it’s awful. I hate it.

“In fact it carries right through the rest of your life for many people. You get nightmares and the nerves are gone… ptsd.

“There has to be a kinder way to test people’s knowledge and ability. We haven’t got there yet.”

Ryan went on to give some sound advice to students.

“I just want to say to every young warrior heading into this war that they insist on putting you through, in that awful system … I hope you’re ok, and that you’ll get through it.

“Remember, in the great scheme of things, it’s going to just tip by in a few days… and then freedom, ok? It’s not your fault that you have to sit this horrible exam. It’s the system.”

Ryan Tubridy went on to tell listeners that he is yet to receive his electric Vespa which was gifted to him by U2 on his final Late Late Show.

He told his listeners that he is looking forward to driving it as he's still using his “rickety old” scooter for now.

“It’s like a hairdresser with notions, but it does the job.”

The presenter has spoken for the first time about his last night in the Late Late seat, saying: “It was all a blur to be honest with you.

“It was so crazy and gorgeous.”

“My favourite job in the whole world now is on the radio, chatting to you and looking forward to the future.”
