'I can no longer dress myself' - Charlie Bird says health has taken 'turn for the worse' as fans rally support

Charlie Bird has shared a heartbreaking update on his social media accounts revealing that his health has taken a “turn for the worse” as he continues to battle Motor Neurone Disease.

The RTÉ icon has been sharing updates on his health with his fans across his social media channels since he was diagnosed with MND in 2021, however, on Sunday he opened up about the current state of his health explaining, “I can no longer dress myself”.

However, he also shared some positive news, adding that he is still mobile and has a number of projects with Samaritans.

The broadcasting legend posted on his Twitter page yesterday evening: “My MND has taken a turn for the worst [sic]. I can no longer dress myself without help from Claire.

“But I am still mobile and I have a number of projects to help Samaritans. As long as I have a breath in my body I am going to continue to extend the hand of friendship to help people.”

Fans of Charlie flocked to the comments to share kind words with the former RTÉ journalist during the difficult time and rally their support for the legend.

One person posted: “Sending you huge love and strength Charlie and of course to Claire too. You’re an inspirational team…keep on keeping on.”

Another added: “Keep going Charlie, Ireland's hero…”

While one more posted: “A beacon for humanity. Thank you, Charlie. Sorry to hear that things have changed for you.”

The sentiment was shared across the board, with another commenting on their admiration for the 73-year-old, they wrote: “Your formidable spirit gives inspiration and comfort to so many of us Charlie- sending you the best vibes always.”

Another simply wrote: “God bless you Charlie you are in my prayers.”
