I Asked ChatGPT What Electric Car Retirees Should Buy on Social Security — Here’s What It Said

Chevrolet

While you might not be driving to work each day as a retiree, you still need reliable transportation. And for those on a fixed Social Security budget, choosing something dependable and affordable is more important than driving a flashy car.

With so many different car models available, it can be hard to decide where your money is best spent. GOBankingRates asked ChatGPT for its recommendations on electric vehicles (EVs) suitable for a retiree on a limited budget.

What To Look For in an EV

Before exploring the two EVs ChatGPT recommended, it’s important to understand what to consider when shopping for a car.

As you get older, getting in and out of the car can become a bit more difficult. That makes this a top factor to consider during your search. The car should also have a reasonable upfront cost and low maintenance expenses.

With an EV, range is also an important consideration. Vehicles with a higher range typically come with a higher price. Retirees just need something that can meet their daily driving needs.

Best Electric Cars To Consider

Here are the top two EVs that ChatGPT recommended for retirees.

Chevrolet Bolt EV/EUV

ChatGPT stated that the Chevrolet Bolt EV is its top choice because it’s “one of the cheapest EVs you can buy (especially used).” The 2027 Bolt has a starting MSRP of $27,600.

It isn’t flashy. It has a simple design that makes it easy for people to get in and out of. But what really makes this a great option for retirees is that it typically requires low maintenance. Knowing you won’t have a lot to worry about beyond preventive maintenance will help put your mind at ease.

While the Bolt doesn’t have an extremely long range, it’s perfect for your daily commuting needs.

ChatGPT summed this car up perfectly, saying, “This is probably the best ‘no stress’ EV. It just does the job without trying to impress anyone.”

Nissan Leaf

Similar to the Chevrolet Bolt, the Nissan Leaf is among the most affordable EVs on the market, with a starting MSRP of $29,990 for a 2026 model. It’s ideal for retirees looking to keep their monthly payments low.

If you’ve never driven an EV, you might feel some hesitation. However, ChatGPT said the driving experience in the Leaf is very similar to that of a non-EV car.
