I asked ChatGPT to write me some songs and poems about Wales and it went surprisingly well

Many of us often joke that our jobs and daily chores will be completely replaced by technology one day. Instead of having to do the dishes or take the rubbish out, one day a robot may do it for us. And in the future, modern technology may well replace us at work too!

With this in mind, more and more people are becoming interested in the incredible potential for AI writers: computer programs that can write things for you, be it a poem, speech, essay or something completely different. It's thought they could make the most difficult, time-consuming or simply just boring writing tasks easier and quicker, delivering whatever you ask the AI writer to write to your computer within just a few seconds.

The AI tech currently taking the world by storm is ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI (an American artificial intelligence research company) which launched in November 2022 and has been designed to "interact in a conversational way" with users. After logging in to the program, users can ask ChatGPT a question on anything and it will use its huge database of information of a wide range of topics and themes to give you an answer, written in "human-like text", the way you'd converse with a friend or colleague. You can also ask ChatGPT to write poems, songs or essays for you that match a theme or feature a key word. In other words, it's a lot more advanced than asking Siri, Alexa or Google for something.

Whilst the technology is incredibly clever, of course, it's not perfect. But ChatGPT does warn users of its "limitations," namely that that it may occasionally "generate incorrect information" and/or "produce harmful instructions or biased content. The software also warns that it has "limited knowledge" of the world and events after 2021.

Intrigued by what it can deliver, we asked ChatGPT to write us poems about Wales with a Valentines theme. We also asked for a rap. Whilst we weren't expecting much, we were pleasantly surprised by the romantic poetry the insentient computer program came up with instantly, though it may be a bit cliché-ridden.

'Write me a Valentines Day sonnet with a Welsh theme'

'Amidst the hills of Wales, my heart does rest, A land of beauty, ancient and sublime' (MEDIA WALES)

The ingenious program wrote us this - and yes, it does follow the rules for a sonnet.

Amidst the hills of Wales, my heart does rest,

A land of beauty, ancient and sublime,

With fields of green and castles standing best,

A land where love can flourish all the time.

And in this land, my heart has found its queen,

A maiden fair with eyes like summer skies,

Her love for me, a flame that burns serene,

And fills my soul with joy that never dies.

Our love, a bond that echoes through the years,

Like words in verse that ring with sweet refrain,

A symphony of passion that endears,

And echoes through the valleys and the plains.

Oh Wales, thy beauty feeds our love divine,

A love that blooms like roses on the vine.

Write me a Valentine's Day poem based in Cardiff

'The castle stands tall and proud, A symbol of our love endowed.' (Richard Williams/WalesOnline)

In Cardiff, where the dragons roam,

My heart beats fast for you alone.

The streets are filled with love and cheer,

As we walk hand in hand, my dear.

The castle stands tall and proud,

A symbol of our love endowed.

The river Taff flows gently by,

As we steal a kiss beneath the sky.

The Millennium Stadium, a place of pride,

Is where we'll watch the rugby side by side.

But even more than the game we'll see,

I'll cherish the moments spent with thee.

In Cardiff, my love, you are my queen,

The most beautiful sight I've ever seen.

On this Valentine's Day, I'll hold you tight,

And thank the stars for your love tonight.

Write me a Valentine's Day poem based in Swansea

'Our love, a lighthouse on the shore, Guiding ships through storms and more.' (Media Wales John Myers)

In Swansea's heart, a love so true,

A bond that's strong, between us two.

Amidst the waves and rugged coast,

Our passion burns like fires of boast.

Our love, a lighthouse on the shore,

Guiding ships through storms and more.

With every tide and every breeze,

Our hearts entwine, our souls at ease.

The sands of Swansea hold our love,

A treasure trove, a gift above.

In every sight, in every sound,

Our love resounds, forever bound.

So on this day, with hearts aglow,

We vow to love, to cherish, to grow.

In Swansea's heart, we pledge anew,

Our love, our life, forever true.

Write me a rap about Wales

'From the mighty Snowdonia to the coast of Tenby Bay | You'll find a land of wonder that will take your breath away' (Media Wales John Myers)

Verse 1

Let me take you on a journey to a land of green and gold

A place where dragons roam and tales of old are told

It's a land of mystery, where legends come alive

And if you're looking for adventure, you won't need to strive

Chorus

Wales, Wales, a land of ancient tales

Where the mountains and the valleys never fail

Wales, Wales, a place that never pales

Come and visit, let your spirit set sail

Verse 2

From the mighty Snowdonia to the coast of Tenby Bay

You'll find a land of wonder that will take your breath away

And if you're feeling hungry, you can try the local fare

From laverbread to bara brith, it's a taste beyond compare

Chorus

Wales, Wales, a land of ancient tales

Where the mountains and the valleys never fail

Wales, Wales, a place that never pales

Come and visit, let your spirit set sail

Verse 3

But it's not just the scenery that makes Wales so great

It's the people that you'll meet, they'll make your heart elate

From Cardiff to Conwy, they'll welcome you with glee

And if you're lucky, they might even teach you a bit of Welsh, you'll see

Chorus

Wales, Wales, a land of ancient tales

Where the mountains and the valleys never fail

Wales, Wales, a place that never pales

Come and visit, let your spirit set sail

Outro

So come on down to Wales, you won't regret the trip

It's a land of magic and wonder, a place where memories drip

From the Brecon Beacons to the Gower, it's a land of majesty

So come and see for yourself, this land of mystery.
