Many on the internet have claimed to be Jane Doe—including men—in solidarity with the real Jane Doe, whom some have tried to dox in light of the Cornell 7 gang-rape allegations. Lifestyle content creator Amanda Ruth and educational content creator Joanna "Jo" Johnson have both said they are Jane Doe.

Content creators Coalpad Cowboy and Momma Cusses have also claimed to be Jane Doe. Educational content creator Birdreaux said she is Jane Doe because victims of sexual assault could be anyone. 'Nine times out of 10, it's not some stranger in a dark alley at gunpoint. It's the person sitting beside you in class. It's the babysitter who fed you macaroni,' she said.

The Viral Campaign
The campaign gained momentum after some men tried to reveal Jane Doe's identity. New York law provides certain privacy protections for victims of sexual offences, including restrictions on the public disclosure of identifying information contained in official records.
However, these protections do not amount to a blanket prohibition on private individuals or media organisations identifying alleged victims. Courts may also allow plaintiffs to file cases anonymously in matters considered sensitive in nature, particularly when they fear reprisal.

A journalist's efforts to obtain information about the identity of Jane Doe, who filed a civil suit against seven Cornell University graduates accused of gang-raping her at a fraternity house in 2024, also drew criticism. Eventually, reports started coming in, and a woman was identified as Jane Doe (IBT Media is not publishing the identity of the alleged Jane Doe for privacy and safety reasons).
At this point, I am not going to dwell on Jane Doe's identity any more than is necessary.

'Unfortunately, she had to be identified for reasons of public interest: to erode the fallacious premise that anyone who ever claims any sort of victimhood—no matter how unvetted, and no matter the countervailing evidence—is entitled to permanent anonymity via specious judicial decree. And thereafter enabled by a compliant, ideologically captive media,' said Michael Tracey.
Backlash
Tracey faced backlash and said his family was also targeted by harassment. Now, social media users are coming out as Jane Doe in solidarity with the real Jane Doe. The campaign is also a way to make searching for her identity more difficult.
DEAR TROLLS: Please stop calling and texting my dad, who happens to have the same first name as me, and has received hundreds of crazed messages since Tuesday -- including all throughout the night. Direct your retarded trolling at ME, please https://t.co/eXhyOFOao1

I was raped at a small midwestern college at a fraternity. I was just 18. The next day, he came up to me and said, hey, we’re cool, right? Forty one years later, I still have to hear his damned voice watching the NFL.
I am Jane Doe.
'Since Michael Tracey and other men are trying to publish the Cornell victim's name and information, then we're all Jane Doe! Are you Jane Doe too?' activist Suzie Rizzo posted on X.

Lawyer Amee Vanderpool also said: 'To anyone who is looking to find out the identity of Jane Doe in the Cornell rape case, look no further, because it's Amee Vanderpool. I am Jane Doe.'

Another shared: 'She's Jane Doe, I'm Jane Doe, every woman you come into contact with is Jane Doe. It doesn't matter who you try to expose or dox. It affects us all and it always has.
Case Update
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has appointed the state's attorney general, Letitia James, as special prosecutor in the Cornell 7 case, which has since been reopened. In the process, Hochul has removed Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten from overseeing the case.
'New information has raised serious questions about how this case was handled, and I've lost faith in the Tompkins County DA's ability to fairly oversee it,' said Hochul.
