Although most dogs learn the 'stay' command as puppies, it doesn't mean they'll always respond to it. That's exactly what one owner came to learn when his dog escaped his property to explore Northern California's mountains on a solo adventure.
Taking to Reddit, a man recalled how his friend almost started a street fight after roaming the mountains in search of his missing dog. He said: "A friend of mine had a dog named Ammo and lived in a super rural area (no power lines, off the grid) in the mountains of Northern California. [It's] where a bunch of prepper types (survivalists) and gun nuts live and a lot of people have large cannabis grows.
"Ammo ran off his property and he couldn’t find him, so he got in his truck and started driving around the dirt roads calling his name." He went on to explain how one of his neighbours soon answered his calls for Ammo - loading up his quad bike with "everything" that could help.
"While passing the property of one of his particularly reclusive neighbours who he had never met, suddenly an older man in military surplus gear comes hurriedly flying down the hill in an ATV (all-terrain vehicle).
"Somewhat alarmed, my friend has no idea what to expect and this man pulls up and says 'Watcha need, brother?'
"My friend starts to reply 'Well my dog ran...' and the guy is like 'No, the ammo! What type do you need, I’ve got it all!'
"So he had to explain to this wily old dude that he was looking for his dog named Ammo, and he was not currently in urgent need of firearm ammunition to defend his weed farm."
Commenting on his post, one user said: "Dude was ready to help a man fight."
Another user added: "I also lived in those parts of Northern California and I had an exact image of the kind of guy you are talking about."
A third user said: "[This is] the sort of guy that pulls on his tactical vest before his slippers in the morning."
