If you've ever been asked to be a bridesmaid for a close friend's wedding, it's not uncommon to excitedly agree before the finer details have been finalised. After initially agreeing to be bridesmaid for her pal, a woman is now questioning her decision after the hometown wedding has now been relocated to picturesque Italy.
Taking to popular forum Mumsnet, the woman detailed her concern that she can't afford to fund the destination wedding next May. While the mum was initially excited to go, she doesn't feel comfortable attending without her 10-year-old son - but the couple isn't allowing any children to attend.
The woman explained: "Close friend has asked me to be bridesmaid for her wedding next May.
"I said yes... She had planned the wedding to be in her home county. They have now decided to have a destination wedding in Italy, no children allowed - they have no kids.
"I've initially said OK... And that I will figure it out but the more I think about it I don't want to go without my 10-year-old, we can't really afford it and would have to forfeit a family holiday with son to go.
"Also where we live there are no direct flights so we would have to change in France or travel four hours to an airport for a direct flight.
"I feel so crappy as I'm meant to be bridesmaid but I just think destination weddings are such a big ask for some people," she added.
Clarifying the situation further, the woman wrote: "Couple earn about £120k combined where as our annual income combined is less than half theirs."
Since posting, Mumsnet users fled to the comment section to sympathise with the woman and advice on how to proceed with the awkward scenario.
One person advised: "Just tell her. If she's a good friend she will understand. If she doesn't, then she's kind of stupid."
A second wrote: "If she's going to insist on a destination wedding she needs to understand most people, regardless of their role, won't be able to go."
