Hyderabad: Student squanders Rs 36 lakh on online gaming app

HYDERABAD: An intermediate student, who was reportedly addicted to online gaming, ended up losing 36 lakh without the knowledge of his mother in Amberpet recently. When the worried woman suspected that someone had swindled the money from her account and approached Hyderabad police, they found out that it was her son’s betting activity which led to the financial loss.

Hyderabad cyber crime police said the youngster had accessed his grandfather’s phone a month ago. Later, he downloaded a gaming application. Using his mother’s banking credentials, he registered on the gaming App by paying a fee. Subsequently, he started placing bets while playing the game.

In a span of a month, he had lost 36 lakhs, police said. “When his mother went to the bank for a different purpose and checked the balance, she found only a few thousands in the account. She realised that multiple transactions were done by unknown persons and lodged a complaint,” police said. The family had received 36 lakh from the government after the boy’s father, who worked in the police department, died while in service.

During the investigation, police found that all the transactions were done using her bank credentials and it was spent on a gaming app. It was then the family realised that it could be their boy who might have done the transactions.

The student opted for auto debit option and made sure his mother did not come to know about his splurge on the online gaming.
