Hyderabad: Dug-up roads bombed out by heavy rain, internal networks in shambles

HYDERABAD: Despite veering towards the centre of a low-pressure area, the city received only light to moderate showers all day, barring twin spells of heavy rain for a few hours.

The mild, steady rainfall did not inundate the city, but wrecked the poorly-maintained internal roads, triggering complaints from citizens.

"Work on drainage lines was done five months ago, but we are still waiting for roads to be laid out. It's a hop-skip-and-jump ordeal since the onset of monsoon," said Aditya, who stays near 100-foot Road, Madhapur.

In the west zone, complaints poured in on Twitter. Kondapur High Tension Road, Beeramguda to Green Field Junction and roads inside Ayyappa Society, Shilpa Garden in Kondapur were badly damaged by incessant rains. Towards the eastern flank, roads at Boduppal, AS Rao Nagar Colony in LB Nagar and Chandrapuri colony were unmotorable.

Even as the workload and budget for repair of internal road network is huge, GHMC officials said, currently they have allocated Rs158.67crore for revamping 448 roads straddling 146km. Of these, only 29 internal roads have been repaired over an 8km stretch. Maximum funds sanction was for Secunderabad roads, straddling 40.96km, followed by Charminar with a 38.41km network. However, most of these works are incomplete.

The highest rainfall on Sunday at 6pm was recorded at Bahadurpura with 18.5mm, followed by Shivrampally with 16.8mm. In the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, Hafeezpet clocked 80mm of rain.
