HYDERABAD: Miyapur police registered a cheating case against film director Ram Gopal Varma based on a court-referred complaint from a producer. The complainant approached court alleging that Varma borrowed 56 lakh from him for production of a movie ‘Disha’ in 2020 and later cheated him.
Miyapur police received a complaint from K Sekhar Raju, proprietor of Sekhara Art Creations in Kukatpally on May 21, alleging he was introduced to Varma by a common friend, Ramana Reddy in 2019. He alleged that in first week of January 2020, Varma took 8 lakh from him and on January 22, 2020, another 20 lakh was given through cheque. “Varma promised to return the amount in six months,” complainant alleged.
In February 2020, Varma citing financial exigencies, sought 28 lakh more. “I transferred 28 lakh more to Varma and he agreed to repay total of 56 lakh on or before the release of movie Disha. In January 2021, I came to know Varma was not producing Disha and I realised that he cheated me,” the complainant alleged. “We registered a case under sections 406, 417, 420, 506 IPC against Ram Gopal Varma,” Miyapur SI P Yadagiri Rao said.
