Huw Edwards says he's 'ashamed' after being caught eating croissant live on BBC News

Veteran broadcaster Huw Edwards admitted he felt 'ashamed' after being caught tucking into a croissant live on BBC News.

The 60-year-old admitted he'd given into temptation during the channel's coverage of the local elections.

Co-star Reeta Chakrabarti was feeding back the figures in the BBC News studio when the camera panned to Huw, who was licking his lips and wiping away crumbs.

Holding his hands up, Huw explainedL "I’m going to admit to you I’ve just had a little bit of croissant.

"So I’m just finishing it and I’m ashamed to say that but there you go. It’s 20 to six in the morning…"

Edwards was covering the overnight shift from 11.40pm on Thursday night to 6am on Friday morning.

He later joked about the hilarious moment with political scientist Professor Sir John Curtice, who appeared on the programme to offer an analysis of the results.

While introducing Sir Curtice, the broadcaster said: “I’m just wondering whether Sir John Curtice has been helping himself to French patisserie this morning as he is chomping through his data."

Curtice then responded: "I was just about to say, Huw, whether you were going to send them up to us, because they have certainly not reached here yet."

Edwards said: “I shall make a delivery at six o’clock Jonathan, no question."

Viewers were amused by the little croissant gaffe and took to social media to comment on the moment.

"Huw Edwards deserves his little bit of croissant," one user joked while another tweeted: "Huw Edwards is a legend," along with a few laughing emojis.

Another said: "Good morning to Huw Edwards’ little bit of croissant only."

Fans were loving the moment and shared their thoughts on social media (BBC)

"Huw Edwards eating a croissant is the only #LocalElections22 news you need today," one user said.

A Twitter user posted: "I love watching that man on TV. He could eat a three course meal during the news and I would forgive him and watch."

A weather presenter on The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2 later made a joke about the incident by taking a bite of a doughnut mid-broadcast.

She said: "I am going to admit to you that I have just had a little bit of doughnut. I am just finishing it. I am ashamed to say that, but there you go."
